National flag tailors with decades of experience or just a few months share the same pride, especially when the country celebrates a major holiday like National Day, September 2.
Ms. Pham Thi Anh, owner of Hai Yen flag sewing facility in Bien Hoa City, established more than 10 years ago, said: "This year, orders for sewing flags of all kinds, including most of the national flags, from our workshop increased by 300% compared to last year, serving customers across the country. Flag tailors have an income of no less than 10 million VND/month."
Ms. Dao Kim Hong (70 years old) has been involved in the profession of sewing national flags and party flags for more than 10 years. She shared: "Every stitch must be done carefully. Even though there are many orders during holidays and Tet, we should not sew carelessly, affecting the quality and aesthetics of the flag."
The gold star is pre-cut according to the pattern and then sewn onto the red fabric. The worker must use a needle to fix the gold star in the correct position before starting to sew.
On average, Ms. Hong cuts and sews more than 20 national flags every day. She does all the work by hand, so it takes time. "When I go out and see my flags hung solemnly, I feel very happy and moved."
Ms. Hong cuts off the excess fabric after sewing. In addition to the small flags, Ms. Hong once sewed a large flag measuring 9 meters long as ordered by the owner of the sewing workshop to be given as a gift to soldiers on duty in the islands of her homeland.
Ms. Anh shared that although the national flag looks simple, not every craftsman can sew it according to the right standards. For over 10 years, Ms. Anh and Ms. Hong have always wanted to find a successor, but not everyone puts their heart into the product. "The national flag is a sacred product and represents national pride," Ms. Anh said.
In the days before the holiday, orders for national flags increased, and nearly 10 workers in Ms. Anh's workshop sometimes had to work overtime to keep up with the demand. Ms. Anh's products not only serve households but also reach agencies, organizations, and companies...
In another flag sewing workshop owned by Ms. Anh, Mr. Nguyen Van Thao (35 years old, living in Bien Hoa City) is spreading fabric, making molds and cutting stars to sew onto the flag. The national flag has its own standards, so cutting the fabric must be meticulous. In addition, attention must be paid to the color of each type of fabric, suitable for each different type of flag.
"The national flag is a sacred symbol of the country, so when making it, we must cherish it and be careful," said Mr. Thao.
Ms. Tran Thi Suu (39 years old, in Bien Hoa City) also has more than 10 years of experience in making flags, sharing: "Not only on the occasion of September 2nd, after the football matches where the Vietnamese team won big, flag makers like us are very happy because everyone holds the national flag in their hands to celebrate the victory."
National flags are usually made of glossy or matte silk. Flags hung in households cost 20,000 - 35,000 VND. Flags hung in agencies and companies are larger in size, usually 1.2 m x 1.8 m, priced from 100,000 - 150,000 VND. Depending on the size and material, there are different prices.
Ms. Anh's workshop also sews all kinds of other flags such as festival flags, national flags... We are very proud of our work because we have contributed a small part to the common joy of the nation, especially on the occasion of September 2nd every year," Ms. Anh shared.
