Van Ta Tan has a history spanning 206 years (since 1817), and has received 16 royal decrees from the reigns of Emperors Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, Tu Duc, Dong Khanh, Thanh Thai, Duy Tan, Khai Dinh, and Bao Dai. Annual rituals are held according to the lunar calendar: the first ceremony of the season on April 17th, the grand ceremony on July 17th (the main ceremony for praying for a good fishing season), and the ceremony on October 25th, aiming to connect people with their origins, the patron saint of their profession, and to strengthen mutual support and friendship. Van Ta Tan is home to hundreds of skeletons of the Nam Hai deity, including some weighing tons. In 2008, Van Ta Tan was granted a provincial-level historical and cultural heritage site certificate by Binh Thuan province.

The Fishing Festival in Van Ta Tan reflects the beliefs and aspirations of the seafaring people for favorable weather, a bountiful harvest, peace, and good fortune in their fishing activities at sea.
