Highlighting the profound restrictions imposed by the Taliban regime on the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous made the call on the day marking two years since the Taliban returned to power in the southwest Asian country (August 15, 2021-August 15, 2023).
According to Sima Bahous, over the past two years, the Taliban has imposed a comprehensive, systematic and unprecedented crackdown on the rights of women and girls. Through the issuance of more than 50 decrees, directives and restrictions, the Taliban has affected every aspect of women’s lives, depriving them of freedom.
The UN official called on the Taliban to reconsider and consider the consequences of the above policy on the reality and future of the country.
Reiterating UN Women’s unwavering commitment to women and girls in Afghanistan, Sima Bahous “urged all parties to join us in supporting Afghan women in every way possible,” from giving them a greater voice, addressing the needs of this vulnerable group, to funding essential services and supporting their businesses.
On the same day, UN officials and partners agreed on the need to continue humanitarian assistance and invest in long-term solutions for Afghanistan, amid economic difficulties that have severely affected living conditions in the country.
The UN has warned that Afghanistan continues to face one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with an estimated 28.3 million Afghans (nearly 70% of the population) expected to rely on humanitarian aid in 2023, up from 24.4 million in 2022. |
The World Health Organization (WHO) is particularly concerned about the health emergency in Afghanistan. According to WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris, the country has 9.5 million people with little or no access to basic health services and 20% of the population suffers from mental health problems; 4 million people are addicted to drugs and related disorders; 875,000 children are acutely malnourished.
