Among the earthquakes in the past 20 hours, there were 4 above 4 magnitude, the remaining were 2.5 to 3.6. The strongest earthquake at 1:28 am on October 6 with 4.9 magnitude in Mang Ri commune, Quang Ngai province with disaster level 1; causing strong shaking in the sub-epicenter and neighboring provinces such as Gia Lai, Da Nang ...
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Earth Sciences - said: Data from the Institute of Earth Sciences shows that in the period 1903-2020, in the former Kon Tum , now Quang Ngai province, there were more than 30 earthquakes, the largest of which was 3.9 magnitude. However, from 2021 to now, the Kon Plong area (former Kon Tum province) recorded more than 1,000 earthquakes of magnitude from 3.0 to 5.0, of which some caused widespread tremors. The strongest was the one at noon on July 28, 2024 with a magnitude of 5.0; before that, on August 23, 2022, an earthquake of 4.7 magnitude was also recorded.
The recent earthquakes were induced earthquakes, caused by the water storage process of the hydroelectric reservoir affecting the active fault system below.
Earthquakes in the old Kon Tum area are forecast to continue in the coming time, but are unlikely to be greater than 5.5 magnitude.
"In the old Kon Plong district, we have completed the earthquake monitoring system with 11 stations. A research project on induced earthquakes in the area has been approved and implemented. This will be the basis to clarify issues related to induced earthquakes in this area," said Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh.
