Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung is a scientist who tirelessly innovates and develops products from medicinal herbs, bringing value to the community and simultaneously inspiring a love of science in many generations of students.

Dedicated to teaching and scientific research, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung (born in 1980), Head of the Physical Chemistry Department, Faculty of Chemistry, and also Deputy Director of the Institute for Research and Application of Science and Technology, University of Science, Hue University - is a scientist who tirelessly creates and develops products from medicinal plants that bring value to the community. Alongside her passion for science, she is also a mentor, inspiring academic pursuits and igniting a love of science in many generations of students.

Education is closely linked to scientific research.

For over 20 years dedicated to teaching and research at the University of Science, Hue University, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung has always worked with the motto: "Education must be linked to scientific research, and scientific research must aim to solve practical problems of society." From this, she has continuously innovated teaching methods, placing learners at the center, encouraging critical thinking, fostering creativity, and closely linking theory and practice, experiments, simulations, and real-world applications.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung, to realize this motto, the school, institute, and faculty have gradually built a modern training and academic infrastructure system, including learning spaces, academic exchange areas, specialized laboratories for chemistry and natural pharmaceuticals, a pharmaceutical preparation area, and a production workshop to serve students.

“These foundations help extend the teaching and learning process beyond the classroom, into a practical research environment where students have access to modern equipment and directly experience the scientific innovation process. This is also a valuable resource for promoting the image of the Faculty of Science, Hue University, to students both domestically and internationally. We consider education and science and technology not only as tools to serve professional work, but also as a bridge between knowledge and practice,” shared Ms. Ai Nhung.

The scientific research project has high practical application.

The research of Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung and her team focuses on extracting and enriching bioactive natural compounds from native and endemic medicinal plants of Vietnam such as Distichochlamys spp., Aspidistra spp., Lactuca indica L., Cordyceps spp., etc., with the aim of developing products to support the prevention of respiratory diseases and improve and enhance health.

She and her research team have developed more than 30 valuable products with practical applications, such as essential oils, health care products, herbal teas, medicinal mushrooms, and biological preparations. These works not only contribute to the conservation and development of indigenous medicinal resources but also open up many practical applications in medicine and sustainable agriculture, contributing to protecting public health and improving the quality of life.

“To implement a research topic or project, my research team and I always survey the real needs of society, taking the motto 'research connected to life' as our guiding principle. The products are developed to solve urgent problems in public health and sustainable agriculture, with the criteria of safety, reasonable cost, and accessibility for all social classes. Thanks to the 'from the laboratory to the market' approach, many of the team's products not only achieve scientific value but are also well-received by consumers, contributing to honoring the value of Vietnamese medicinal herbs,” Ms. Nhung said.

Achievements in research and teaching

Throughout her career, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung has achieved many remarkable accomplishments. She has successfully supervised numerous postgraduate students and doctoral candidates; chaired and participated in many scientific research projects at various levels, from institutional, provincial, ministerial, national to international collaborations. She is also the Head of a strong research group and an outstanding research group at Hue University.

To date, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung has published over 150 scientific articles in international and domestic journals, received 3 patents for useful solutions, and won 6 science and technology awards at various levels. Notably, she was awarded the L'Oreal - UNESCO Award for Women in Science at the national level in 2023; the Hitachi Global Fund's Outstanding Asian Innovation Award in 2024; the first Hue Ancient Capital Women's Innovation Award in 2024; and the Vietnam Women's Award 2025 from the Vietnam Women's Talent Award Fund.

“With over 20 years dedicated to teaching, research, and management, all the achievements that I and my research team have attained are the culmination of continuous effort, along with the support and assistance from the government, the university, colleagues, students, and businesses. We always aim to dedicate ourselves to integrating science with practice and making practical contributions to the development of the country in the era of global integration,” Ms. Nhung expressed.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vo Thanh Tung, Rector of the University of Science, Hue University, highly appreciated the contributions of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung. He stated that, in her role as Deputy Director of the Institute for Research and Application of Science and Technology, Ms. Nhung not only excelled in her teaching duties but also led many research projects with high practical value. With nearly 20 years of dedicated research, especially in the field of endemic Vietnamese medicinal plants, she has successfully extracted and applied valuable medicinal substances, directly contributing to public health care and the socio-economic development of Hue city.

The recognition of Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung at the 6th Hue City Patriotic Emulation Congress (2025-2030) is a well-deserved acknowledgment of her efforts, dedication, and responsibility towards science and education. This also serves as a great source of inspiration for the faculty, staff, and students of the university, affirming the prestige and position of the University of Science, Hue University, on the national and international scientific map.

“We also believe that Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ai Nhung will continue to uphold her pioneering spirit and contribute even more to the sustainable development of the University, Hue City, and the country,” Associate Professor, Dr. Vo Thanh Tung affirmed.
