“Awakening” memories with technology

QTO - Quang Tri, the land where "every inch of land is a page of history" is gradually transforming itself in the journey of renewing historical tourism. From places associated with war and peace, creative tourism models have been born to help "awaken" memories of a time of war and war through technology, emotions and vivid experiences.

Memory Zone

Known as “the most vivid museum of revolutionary war relics”, Quang Tri currently has more than 700 historical-cultural relics and ranked scenic spots, including 4 special national relics (Hien Luong-Ben Hai banks, Quang Tri Ancient Citadel and memorial sites of the 81-day and night event in 1972; Vinh Moc tunnels and Vinh Linh tunnel village system; Truong Son road - Ho Chi Minh road passing through Quang Tri) and 2 national cemeteries. The names of the lands associated with immortal feats of arms have created a sacred memory space that anyone who sets foot here will remember forever.

In recent years, Quang Tri tourism has made significant changes when historical tourism is not only limited to sightseeing and incense offering, but also aims at experiencing, educating traditions and spreading human values. The source tours, gratitude journeys… organized periodically have helped the younger generation have more opportunities to understand more about the past and appreciate the present more.

One of the most innovative innovations of Quang Tri tourism in 2025 is the product "Legendary Truong Son Road - Chi Huy Cave", which has just been honored at the Vietnam Tourism Awards 2025 in the category of Most Innovative Tourism Product. This is the result of cooperation between the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management Board and T20 Quyet Thang Company Limited, within the Ecotourism Development Project for the period 2021-2030. Different from traditional relic tours, this product takes visitors on a "journey back in time" using 9D virtual reality technology and augmented reality (AR). Sitting on the legendary ZIL-130 truck model, visitors are "transformed" into Truong Son soldiers driving, feeling the shaking, bomb smoke and heat on the fierce support route in the past.

Mr. Tran Xuan Hop, Deputy General Director of T20 Quyet Thang Co., Ltd., shared: “The Vietnam Tourism Award is a recognition of creative efforts, and at the same time affirms the right direction when combining historical values and modern technology. We aim for a sustainable tourism product, both spreading the meaning of traditional education and creating livelihoods for local people.”

Immersive experience

Not only Hang Chi Huy, many other relic sites in Quang Tri are also investing in digitalization and modernizing the form of explanation, helping visitors interact more deeply with the historical space. The application of QR codes, digital maps, automatic 3D voice explanations... are being gradually deployed at many historical relic sites. Origin tours are contributing to bringing history closer to visitors. The infrastructure system and tourism services at relic sites are being invested in more synchronously. Many homestays and community accommodation areas have sprung up near relic sites, associated with local economic development. Not only preserving memories, Quang Tri is knowing how to "awaken memories" by renewing, by technology, by emotional experiences.

Inaugurated on the occasion of the 53rd anniversary of the sacrifice of the Youth Volunteers at Long Dai ferry, the Memorial Site "The Sacrifice of 16 Youth Volunteers (September 1972)" in Truong Ninh commune has become an address to educate the younger generation about tradition. All investment items are carried out in accordance with the planning, choosing architecture suitable for the space of gratitude and local cultural identity, thereby forming a spacious, harmonious and solemn relic complex.

In particular, the space for displaying documents and artifacts is equipped with modern technological equipment, such as: Visual simulation sand table system, documentary projector and especially touch kiosk to look up information about relics..., helping visitors easily access information in a vivid, accurate and attractive way. The combination of modern technology and rich historical content has brought visitors authentic, profound and emotional experiences about the glorious past.

Mr. Ho Duc Phong, Captain of the Youth Volunteer Team for Economic Construction in Quang Tri Province, said: “Not only at the Long Dai ferry site, but the application of digitalization has been implemented at many relic sites in the area. Today's young generation approaches history through technology and experience. Therefore, the digitalization of relics, the application of automatic explanations or 3D images helps young people to easily feel, understand and be more proud of the tradition of their ancestors.”

More investment needed to “digitize memories”

Despite many innovative efforts, digitalization at major relic sites in Quang Tri is still in its early stages. Many famous "red addresses" such as Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, Hien Luong-Ben Hai Banks... still rely mainly on traditional forms of explanation, without a visual data system, digital experiences or virtual reality interactive applications. This makes the potential of the destinations still not fully exploited, especially for young tourists - those who tend to seek multimedia experiences and technological connections.

In order to overcome these limitations, Quang Tri province is simultaneously implementing four key investment projects to upgrade historical revolutionary relics, including: Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Museum; Vinh Moc Tunnels Relic Site (phase 1); Quang Tri Ancient Citadel National Special Relic Site and memorial sites for the 81 days and nights of 1972; Thong Nhat Park at the Hien Luong-Ben Hai National Special Relic Site. The restoration and preservation of relics will contribute to improving the quality of tourist services, while creating symbolic cultural works. When the projects are completed, Quang Tri will have more conditions to build unique tourism products, combined with traditional education.

With innovation and creativity in tourism thinking, Quang Tri is gradually shaping its own identity for its gratitude and origin tourism products. Each restored construction and each digitized experience is not simply an investment in tourism, but also a way to preserve memories and spread the humanistic values of a land that has gone through bombs and bullets. When memories are preserved and spread by technology, history will no longer lie dormant in museums, but will become a vibrant flow in the experience journey of each tourist when setting foot in the land of fire.
