In response to the recent debates about the literature test, Master Tran Le Duy, lecturer of the Literature Department at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said that the test must ensure that it is suitable for students, such as the difficulty of the questions, the correlation between time and the requirements of the task... Differentiating statements can be made, but they must not deviate from the program. The test must ensure scientific quality, such as accurate citations and transparent sources.

According to Master Le Duy, the literature test should move away from the "reciting and quoting" method, focusing on memorization and reproduction, and should focus on application. From there, one can express and handle the question according to one's own thinking, rather than learning "model essays" to prove rigid opinions.

According to Master Nguyen Phuoc Bao Khoi, lecturer of the Faculty of Literature at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, the person who creates the test needs to clearly understand the test making trend, determine the discussion requirements, consider the workload and study pressure of students at the time of the assessment to decide whether to quote or not to quote material in the literary discussion section.

According to Master Khoi, the Ministry of Education and Training has also provided very complete instructions and training on the construction of matrices, specification tables and exam questions for both the old and new programs. In addition, Ho Chi Minh City is one of the few localities leading the country in innovating assessment and testing very early, so it is a pity that up to this point, there are still teachers who do not pay attention to the appropriate test structure.

Second, that is the principle of finding materials. You must choose reputable materials, that is, from reliable sources. To do so, teachers need to take the time to read, research and evaluate carefully.

Third, teachers need to pay attention to the difficulty of the materials to be equivalent to the texts in the textbooks in terms of capacity, expression, topic, content... The materials must be aesthetically pleasing, guide people towards beauty, goodness, and have educational value.

Fourth, the test maker must process the text. For relatively difficult texts, they can take notes, explain to students, and provide additional information.

Fifth, teachers who set questions need to put themselves in the students' shoes to estimate their ability to solve the questions, the compatibility between the questions' requirements and the time limit, so that the questions are both suitable for their abilities and differentiated.

Sixth, grading instructions must be in the direction of assessing students' abilities, measuring their skills, not counting scoring ideas as in the past.

What is standard text?

Regarding the organization of periodic tests in literature, Master Tran Tien Thanh, a specialist in charge of literature at the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that from the beginning of the school year, subject groups of schools or education and training departments have been given autonomy and self-determination in developing plans to test and evaluate students based on the principles of being correct in the program, scientific and reasonable.

According to Master Thanh, standard materials ensure the requirements of ideology, aesthetic value, educational value with appropriate length, good and suitable content, reliable citation sources... Therefore, teachers can base on and refer to texts in textbooks to choose similar materials. Build a question bank, a common material repository to create questions. Pay attention to the difficulty, capacity, and compatibility between test time, materials and requirements.

In addition, expert Tran Tien Thanh noted the need to prepare multiple-choice questions for the "reading comprehension" test in literature. Mr. Thanh said that depending on the type of text, the organization conditions, and the purpose of the test, teachers can choose to use multiple-choice questions or not.

Faced with the current debates about the literature test, the subject specialist of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said he is listening and will take note in professional activities of the upcoming second semester.
