VnExpressVnExpress25/01/2024

Ivy, kumquat, and money tree are plants that can absorb toxins, help purify the air, and bring fortune during Tet.

Many Vietnamese believe that displaying ornamental plants at home at the beginning of the year helps purify the air, absorb toxins, bring good health, and generate prosperity, helping the homeowner to have more favorable and lucky times. Green plants and flowers in the living room affect us through sight and smell, thereby making people's mood and emotions better, making it easier to achieve more success, according to Dr. Huynh Tan Vu, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, branch 3.

Doctor Vu recommends three types of plants that can absorb toxins well, purify the air, and are also medicinal herbs, which can be displayed in the house at the beginning of the year:

ivy

Ivy is a climbing plant often used as an ornamental plant with good feng shui meaning, symbolizing wealth, fertility and luck.

Ivy also has the effect of purifying the air, helping to remove formaldehyde in carpets and wall paint, absorbing harmful substances such as benzene, phenol, nicotine. Therefore, many health experts recommend planting ivy in residential areas.

Ivy is also a valuable medicinal herb, often mentioned in cough treatment products, with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, detoxifying, and skin care support properties. The parts used as medicine are the dried leaves or fruits. In traditional medicine, ivy leaves have the effect of dispelling wind, eliminating dampness, strengthening the lungs, stopping coughs, relieving asthma, activating blood circulation, cooling the liver, and detoxifying. Ivy leaves are often used in many medicinal recipes to support skin care and help eliminate toxins.

However, it should be noted that information about the safety of ivy is limited, so caution should be exercised when using it.

Kumquat tree

Kumquat tree symbolizes health, peace, longevity and luck in love, showing family reunion. In addition to having a good meaning, kumquat tree also has high nutritional value, good for health. Kumquat fruit has a fragrant smell, sweet and sour taste, the peel has spicy and aromatic oil. The scent of essential oil from kumquat tree helps to freshen the air, repel mosquitoes and insects.

In traditional medicine, kumquat has a sweet, spicy, slightly sour taste, warm properties, helps dissolve phlegm, reduce cough, and regulate the air. The abundant amount of vitamin C in the fruit has antioxidant properties that help enhance the body's resistance, improve the immune system, and protect cells from harmful bacteria and viruses. Eating kumquat with a reasonable amount of rock sugar can cure coughs and asthma caused by wind-cold in the elderly.

Money tree

This is a feng shui tree, meaning it brings fortune, luck and is a symbol of success. According to feng shui, the number of lucky bamboo plants planted in a pot will have different lucky meanings.

In addition, the money tree also has the effect of purifying the air in the family, absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Placing the tree in the house will help regulate the air, increase humidity, and effectively fight bacteria.

However, Dr. Vu noted that the money tree contains many calcium oxalate crystals. If you accidentally eat it or come into contact with the plant's secretions, it can affect the mucous membranes of the lips, tongue, mucous membranes in the throat or conjunctiva of the eyes. Therefore, families should display this plant high up, out of reach of children.
