(CLO) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un criticized the US for escalating tensions, saying the Korean Peninsula is facing an unprecedented risk of nuclear war while visiting a North Korean defense exhibition.
In a speech at a huge military exhibition in Pyongyang on Thursday, Kim Jong Un said: "Never before have the warring parties on the Korean Peninsula faced such a dangerous and tense confrontation that could escalate into a destructive thermonuclear war."

"We have gone as far as we could in our negotiations with the US. However, what we clearly see from the results is not the great power's desire for coexistence, but its stance of relying solely on strength...", KCNA quoted him as saying.
Mr. Kim Jong Un met former US President Donald Trump in three historic summits in Singapore, Vietnam and the inter-Korean demilitarized zone in 2018 and 2019.
However, the talks failed to produce concrete results due to disagreements over North Korea's nuclear weapons renunciation and Kim Jong Un's demands for the lifting of international sanctions.
Mr Trump has previously praised his relationship with the North Korean leader, claiming he prevented a potential nuclear war.

Kim Jong Un called for continued development and upgrading of "ultra-modern" weapons to strengthen the country's strategic position. At the "National Defense Development Exhibition", North Korea displayed a variety of strategic and tactical weapons, emphasizing its determination to strengthen its defense capabilities.
Last week, Kim Jong Un called on the North Korean military to improve its combat capabilities and accused the US and its allies of escalating tensions to the "worst in history." He also called the Korean peninsula " the world's most dangerous hotspot."
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are rising as Pyongyang continues to test missiles and the US and South Korea continue to conduct military exercises. At the same time, recent military cooperation between North Korea and Russia has also complicated the situation.
