Pentatonic
As one of the first short films submitted to the competition, the short film Ngũ cung âm by author Đinh Hoàng Long impressed with its excellent image quality and camera angles. The film takes viewers to the traditional cải lương stage, where the love story and passion for art of the characters are vividly portrayed. The main character of the film is a đàn kim artist who painfully remembers a magnificent performance in the past, the golden moment of his career but also the time when he lost the person he loved right on stage.
The production team's ability to lead the story is the work's great strength. In particular, the surprising but extremely reasonable ending of Ngu Cung Am not only helps viewers sympathize with the characters but also leaves many echoes after the film ends. The film's scenes depicting the atmosphere backstage and during the performance are well-done, meticulous, not inferior to many current TV dramas.
The costumes and dialogues are close to the original stage model, showing that the crew has thoroughly researched the performing arts. This is rare for young filmmakers today. True to the name of the film, Ngu Cung Am has brought beautiful sounds of tradition, stage art and even the heartbreaking love of couples, worthy of being a strong candidate in the Vietnamese Short Film Competition this year.
Distance is a rare animated short film competing in this year's competition. Even in its own genre, Distance has created a difference and attraction. The film's graphic processing techniques are good, the images are evocative and easily attract viewers right from the first scenes. The film tells the story of two brothers who, while sneaking out one night, saw their mother with a different, scary appearance. The author uses the distorted image of the mother through the child's perspective to reflect the sadness and loss in the family. When a big event occurs, people tend to withdraw and create distance even from loved ones.
In just 3 minutes, the authors Thanh Bach and Thanh Tu have shown their solidity in filmmaking techniques and their use of images. Not only is the image superior, the music in the film is also very sophisticated. Although only using the melody of the song Thang Cuoi , the authors have cleverly placed it precisely in each segment to attract and push the emotions of the viewers.
Old love story
If Ngu Cung Am brings viewers to the art of Southern theater, the short film Chuyen Tinh Xua opens up a familiar space of the North, through the brown ao dai and the way of speaking with a clear folk song melody. Chuyen Tinh Xua is the story of a poor boy who is still attached to his old love, causing the love story between him and his new lover to encounter many difficulties.
The most outstanding feature of the film is the poetic dialogue that does not feel forced. It is this somewhat literary way of speaking that makes a big difference, helping the film's ancient rural setting become more convincing. "Marrying you makes me homeless/Without money or silver, what can I rely on?", "Women are like falling raindrops/One goes to the palace, the other goes to the fields", "My shirt has been torn for a long time/Tomorrow I will borrow her to sew it together" ... are extremely impressive lines inspired by folk songs in the film.
With In the film Old Love Story, author Van Tri Thanh and his team have shown great investment in the setting, the space of the well, the communal house yard, the rice fields, and the potato fields are described precisely, contributing to bringing a realistic atmosphere and a different appeal to the film. This promises to be a strong work in the race to conquer the major awards of the Vietnamese short film contest.
In addition to the above short films, the organizing committee of the contest has also received many quality works and is planning to widely introduce them to the public on Thanh Nien Newspaper's media channels. In particular, the Vietnamese short film contest has just announced that it will extend the submission deadline to July 5, 2024, bringing opportunities to many filmmakers as well as film enthusiasts.
