The Earth's core is leaking, a huge amount of gold is about to rise to the surface?

(Dan Tri) - Geologists believe that material streams located very deep may have continuously exchanged with the Earth's mantle and crust, carrying many rare metals and materials.

A new scientific discovery from volcanic rocks in Hawai'i is shaking up the global geological community. Accordingly, materials from the Earth's core, including gold and some rare metals, are leaking to the planet's surface.

This not only changes human understanding of the Earth's structure, but also opens up new questions about the distribution of precious metals, which are considered extremely rare resources.

Traces of precious metals from the deepest layer of the Earth

A study recently published by a team of scientists from the University of Göttingen (Germany) shows that in volcanic rock samples taken in Hawai'i, geochemists have discovered a special substance. That is the 100Ru isotope of ruthenium metal, which is very rare in the crust but common in the Earth's core.

“When the first results came in, we realized we had really found gold,” said Dr Nils Messling, lead author of the study.

According to scientists, the unusual presence of ruthenium-100 along with traces of gold and other precious metals is evidence that superheated material from the core boundary (scientific name: mantle) has risen to the surface.

This event accidentally brought with it rare elements, once thought to be "imprisoned" deep within the Earth.

The discovery goes against the long-held belief that the Earth's core is completely geochemically isolated from the layers above. Specifically, Dr. Matthias Willbold, co-author of the study, affirmed: "We can now demonstrate that hundreds of trillions of tons of mantle material are being brought up from the core boundary, forming volcanic islands like Hawai'i."

Earth's Core: The Source of Precious Metals

This discovery is considered one of the clearest evidences showing that the Earth's core is not completely separate as previously assumed.

Geologists believe that very deep streams of material may have been continuously exchanging with the Earth's mantle and crust for billions of years.

Not only does this change the way humans understand the planet's geological evolution, it also raises the possibility that gold and precious metals on the Earth's surface may come from its core itself - not just from asteroids as previously widely assumed.

However, according to experts, this "leak" phenomenon is not as dangerous as science fiction movies. "This discovery is exciting because it shows that the deep Earth is more dynamic than we thought," said Dr. Forrest Horton, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA, who discovered the Earth's core leaking helium in 2023.

However, accessing or mining precious metals from this deep source is almost impossible in the near future.

The reason is that these rare materials can only appear on the surface through tectonic processes, mantle movements and volcanic eruptions lasting millions of years.

The new discovery is not only a remarkable scientific achievement, but also opens up many questions: Has the Earth's core ever leaked before?

Along with that, questions such as how this process is related to the formation of the world's largest gold mine, and whether there could be other elements also "traveling" from the Earth's core to the crust... will make scientists have a headache to find the answer.

“The findings open up a whole new perspective on evolution within our home planet,” Dr Messling concluded.
