WATCH CLIP:
At around 4:30 p.m. this afternoon (September 5), floodwater from the high hill on Highway 706B poured down again, carrying red sand down to Nguyen Thong Street in front of house number 300, near Phan Thiet University (Phu Hai Ward, Phan Thiet City).
The raging floodwaters affected traffic on the coastal route connecting Phan Thiet city center to Ham Tien – Mui Ne tourist area, causing local congestion. Many vehicles passing through here were forced to turn around for fear of being swept away by the flood. A few people were unable to react in time and had to abandon their vehicles.
According to images recorded by local people, at this time, despite being warned by people nearby, a girl tried to cross the flood and was swept away. Afterwards, although someone rushed out to help, the girl was still swept away about 200m, stuck in a bush.
Discovering the girl choking on water, people gave first aid and called an ambulance to take her to Binh Thuan General Hospital.
The continuous heavy rains over the past two days have caused sand to flow down the above road, causing traffic jams. Sand also flowed into roadside shops.
The cause was determined by the functional sector of Binh Thuan province due to water accumulating on the side of road 706B after heavy rain, but the culvert here has not been connected to the drainage system to the sea downstream because this project has not been completed. From there, water accumulating on the vacant land above Nguyen Thong road, forming a sand flood that overflowed down.
Up to now, Phan Thiet City authorities have implemented temporary measures to repair embankments and straighten the flow, but the situation of sand flooding onto the road still recurs.
Sand flood hit the road to Mui Ne, burying many houses and vehicles . Following the water flow after heavy rain, red sand from high hills fell onto many roads and tourist areas, burying many cars and motorbikes in Mui Ne and Ham Tien wards, Phan Thiet city, Binh Thuan province.
