Over the past three days (October 21-24), taking advantage of the sunny weather, which is favorable for harvesting and drying rice, farmers in Ham Phu commune, Ham Thuan Bac district, have been rushing to mobilize combine harvesters to speed up the harvesting of approximately 100 hectares of early-season rice. The farmers are very pleased because the rice crop is bountiful and the prices are good.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhung from Phu Lap village, Ham Phu commune, happily shared: "In Phu Lap village, my family cultivates 1.2 hectares of rice; the rice variety used is TH6. Thanks to early sowing, favorable weather, and minimal pest and disease damage, the rice is developing well, with an estimated yield of about 70 quintals/hectare. Normally, rice crops in the main season are often heavily affected by pests and diseases, requiring farmers to invest in fertilizers and pesticides for control, but the yield is still not as high as in the summer-autumn and winter-spring seasons. However, the early rice crop in 2023 is completely different; the pest and disease situation is negligible."
"The rice is growing well, with few pests and diseases, which means low investment costs. A bumper crop, coupled with good prices of 8,600 – 8,800 VND/kg, 1,000 – 1,500 VND/kg higher than the previous year's crop, means farmers are making a good profit of 20 – 25 million VND/ha," Ms. Nhung added.
Mr. Vo Ngoc Tam, Chairman of the Ham Phu Commune People's Committee, said: Due to its location at the headwaters of the Song Quao irrigation reservoir, farmers have the advantage of proactively planting rice according to the seasonal schedule. In the 2023 crop season, the entire commune planted 1,600 hectares of rice, achieving 100% of the plan. Of that, about 100 hectares of early-season rice were in Phu Lap village. Thanks to simultaneous planting in each field, the harvesting process was completed within just one week.
