The 2025 high school graduation exam will have a new format structure, increasing differentiation. To help students keep up with the changes in the upcoming high school graduation exam, high schools have developed plans to organize teaching and review for students.
The exam has a new multiple choice format.
In 2025, students studying under the 2018 GeneralEducation Program will take their graduation exams. The high school graduation exam from 2025 will be built on a competency-based approach, marking a major change. Therefore, the exam is expected to have many new features.
The exam will have a new format structure and increased differentiation. In order to help schools orient their teaching and review for students, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has announced 18 reference questions for subjects of the high school graduation exam from 2025.
The Ministry of Education and Training said that the reference exam ensures compliance with regulations on the structure and format of the High School Graduation Exam from 2025 announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, and closely follows the 2018 General Education Program and mainly grade 12.
Compared to previous years, this year the reference exam was announced nearly 5 months earlier. The early announcement of the reference exam is considered to create favorable conditions; helping schools, teachers and students to be proactive in the process of teaching, learning and reviewing to prepare for the exam.
Regarding the new structure of the exam format, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality Management (Ministry of Education and Training) Nguyen Ngoc Ha said that the new structure retains the same 40 questions in most subjects. However, with the exam questions for objective multiple-choice subjects, in addition to the multiple-choice format that students are familiar with, the exam from 2025 will have a new multiple-choice format.
Specifically, the questions in the multiple-choice test are divided into 3 parts: Part 1 includes multiple-choice questions; Part 2 includes true-false questions; Part 3 includes short-answer multiple-choice questions.
Practice and get used to the changes of the exam
Among the 18 reference questions, the Literature exam attracted public attention because of the new way of making questions compared to the old program. The language materials outside of textbooks are predicted to end the situation of guessing exam questions and students will no longer memorize or study lopsidedly.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Giang - teacher at Tran Quang Khai High School ( Hung Yen ) said that the exam has many innovations in the requirements of each part, differentiating good and excellent students, meeting the requirements of improving the quality of teaching the subject.
According to Ms. Giang, the sample exam ensures that the criteria for selecting materials and question matrix are correct, suitable for the level and awareness of students. The change in content in the writing section plays an important role in reducing the pressure on the first candidates taking the High School Graduation Exam under the 2018 General Education Program.
The number of texts in the official exam may be higher than the reference exam. Therefore, Ms. Giang noted that students need to pay attention to practicing the skills of reading quickly and accurately to ensure effective test-taking.
To help students keep up with changes in the upcoming high school graduation exam, high schools have developed plans to organize teaching and review for students.
According to Principal of Thach Ban High School (Long Bien District) Bui Thuy Linh, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school has 730 12th grade students. As soon as the reference questions for the 2025 high school graduation exam were issued, the school's professional groups researched, discussed, and built a test and assessment question bank.
Ms. Linh said that in the recent mid-term exam, the school organized for students to practice with the exam, in which the exam questions of all subjects were built closely following the structure and format of the reference exam. From the test results, the school has more data on the level of response of students, thereby promptly taking appropriate and effective support measures.
From 2025, the high school graduation exam will be held over 2 days with 3 sessions, instead of 4 sessions as before. The 2025 exam is expected to take place on June 26-27, 2025.
The biggest change in the 2025 High School Graduation Exam is that candidates will take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects: Math, Literature and 2 elective subjects from the following subjects: Foreign Language, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Technology.
With this plan, from 2025, candidates taking the high school graduation exam will have 2 subjects reduced compared to the current high school graduation exam. This is also the first time Information Technology and Technology are included as elective subjects in the high school graduation exam.
