Reasons for not being able to access Canva

On the afternoon of October 20 ( Hanoi time), AWS's monitoring system reported that many services were experiencing operational problems. The company said it was "investigating increased error rates and latency for many AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region". The problem also affected many other markets around the world.

Users on Reddit reported that the smart assistant Alexa has stopped working. Alexa stopped responding to queries or completing requests. Preset tasks like alarms also stopped working as intended.

The AWS outage appears to have affected other cloud platforms as well. Perplexity, Airtable, and the McDonalds app were all down. The cause of the outage is unclear. The timing of service restoration remains unclear. On Downdetector, dozens of error reports spiked at the same time. These entities all rent the Amazon cloud.

"Perplexity is currently down. The root cause is an AWS issue. We are working to fix it," Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas wrote on X.

The AWS console first reported issues in the US-EAST-1 Region at 3:11 a.m. ET. “We are actively working to mitigate the issue and understand the cause. The company will provide new information in 45 minutes, or sooner,” Amazon said in a 4 p.m. ET report.

AWS's US-East-1 region has seen widespread outages in 2020, 2021, and 2023. Previous incidents have taken multiple websites and platforms offline for several hours.

The AWS outage has not yet had much impact on the services that Vietnamese users often use or domestic businesses. However, the few platforms that have problems have affected many people.

"Canva has been down for 2 hours and still hasn't been restored. I can't do anything, my work is completely interrupted," said Pham Chi, an employee in charge of a social media page for a business in Ho Chi Minh City. This user uses Canva as their main design and presentation solution. However, the application was interrupted on the afternoon of October 20 due to an issue with AWS.
