Diez, 32, is currently ranked 268th on the ATP rankings. The Canadian has reached a career high of 134 ATP rankings and has played all four Grand Slams.

Despite being underestimated, Hoang Nam still entered the match confidently, with good serves and accurate scoring. He won games five and seven when Diez served, thereby ending the first set with a score of 6-2.

Continuing the momentum in the second set, Hoang Nam won another serve game to lead 4-2. At this point, he was only two games away from making history. But at the crucial moment, the 26-year-old player continuously made mistakes. Thanks to that, Diez regained the initiative, won two serve games and closed the second set with a score of 6-4.

In the third set, when he was trailing 1-2, Hoang Nam served in game four and led 40-0 but lost. In game five, he continued to lead 40-0 and had a great chance to tie the game but let the scenario of the previous game repeat itself.

In the end, Hoang Nam lost 3-6, receiving 5,150 USD (about 125 million VND).

Shanghai is one of nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in the world and attracts the world's strongest players. The 2020-2022 period was postponed due to Covid-19 prevention policies in China. This time, world number one Novak Djokovic did not participate, but the remaining 19 players in the top 20 were present, notably Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune.
