Many people suffer from restless legs syndrome - Image generated by AI
Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Hong - Department of Examination and Treatment on Demand, People's Hospital 115 (HCMC) - said that the symptoms are manifestations of restless legs syndrome. This is a common chronic movement disorder, characterized by uncomfortable or abnormal sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move the legs.
Symptoms are more pronounced at rest, especially in the evening or at night, and are temporarily improved by movement such as walking or stretching the legs. This condition seriously affects the quality of sleep and daily life.
The exact cause of restless legs syndrome is unknown. Some mechanisms are thought to involve disturbances in dopaminergic transmission in the central nervous system, iron deficiency in specific regions of the brain, or autosomal recessive genetic factors.
If left untreated, this syndrome can cause prolonged sleep disorders; fatigue and daytime sleepiness, reducing the ability to work and study; risk of depression and anxiety; increased risk of accidents if the patient drives while sleep deprived.
To diagnose the disease, doctors rely on clinical history and description of typical symptoms. There is no specific test for this syndrome. However, screening tests may be needed to rule out secondary causes such as iron deficiency.
Dr. Hong recommends that people with this syndrome should do light exercise such as walking, yoga; avoid strenuous exercise close to bedtime; maintain good sleep habits (avoid using electronic devices, caffeine, alcohol before bed); relax mentally, get enough sleep. Take medication as prescribed by your doctor.
There is no specific prevention. However, a diet rich in iron and vitamin C may help improve symptoms, while avoiding caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, and foods high in sugar or fat should be avoided.
