Mai wins big at the 2024 Danang Asian Film Festival

On the evening of July 6, the closing ceremony of the second Da Nang Asian Film Festival 2024 with the theme "Setting Sail" took place at Ariyana International Convention Palace, Da Nang City.

There are 63 film projects competing at the Festival, many of which have achieved high revenue such as "Mai", "Lat mat 7", "Quy cau"... or won previous international awards such as "Cu li khong bao khong cry", "Ben trong vo vang".

Tran Thanh's "Mai" leads with 3 awards at the 2024 Da Nang Asian Film Festival

The Film Festival program is still divided into two main categories: Asian Film Competition and Vietnamese Film Competition.

In the final results, in the Vietnamese Film category, Tran Thanh’s “Mai” led with 3 awards, including the Best Vietnamese Film category. This work also helped Tran Thanh surpass Ly Hai (“Lat mat 7: Mot uoc”) and Vu Ngoc Dang to win the Best Director category. “Mai” also brought Phuong Anh Dao the Best Actress award.

Receiving the Best Director and Best Vietnamese Film awards, director Tran Thanh shared that at first he was afraid of being placed with art films, because the jury's evaluation criteria often leaned towards this genre of film, although he still tried to balance artistic elements and ticket sales.

Tran Thanh thanked the film crew, saying that the award is a door that brings many opportunities to the country's cinema.

Phuong Anh Dao was not present to receive the award for Best Actress, so director Tran Thanh went on stage to receive it on her behalf.

“Flip Side 7: A Wish” by director Ly Hai also won big when it won two important awards: the NETPAC Special Award for Most Favorite Film and Best Cast - a new award at this year's festival.

Meanwhile, the Best Actor award was given to Thai Hoa for his performance in “Con Nhót Môt Chong”. Unlike last year, this year’s Vietnamese Film category did not award Best Screenplay.

In the category of Best Asian Film, “Cu Li Khong Bao Nhat Cuong” by director Pham Ngoc Lan surpassed many international works to win the Best Film award. “Inside the Golden Cocoon” - another Vietnamese project also brought home the Best Director award for filmmaker Pham Thien An.

The movie "Mai" revolves around the life of the female lead Mai (Phuong Anh Dao), a nearly 40-year-old massage worker who accidentally meets musician Duong (Tuan Tran).

The Japanese film “A Girl Named Ann” was the most notable work in the Asian Film category with 2 Special Jury Awards and Best Actress for Yuumi Kawai. The Chinese film “All Ears” (China) won the Best Screenplay award.
