January 29 (January 29, 1929-2024) marks the 95th anniversary of the publication of the daring literary work "All Quiet on the Western Front."

"All Quiet on the Western Front" is a novel by German writer Erich Maria Remarque, which quickly became a phenomenon with its painful war theme.

The novel caused a strong shock in the German cultural community. With its touching stories of life on the battlefield, the work was praised as "a testament to all those who fell on the battlefield". The famous critic Henry Louis Macken did not hesitate to declare: "Without doubt, this is the best novel about World War I".

The success of "All Quiet on the Western Front" did not stop in Germany. The work reached out globally and became one of the best-selling German literary works in the world . With more than 20 million copies released and translated into 50 different languages, Remarque's work touched millions of people around the world with its message about the tragedy and consequences of war.

Erich Maria Remarque's book "All Quiet on the Western Front" received positive reviews from both the public and literary critics. First published in 1929, the novel depicts the lives and experiences of German soldiers during World War I.

With its realistic and emotional writing style, "All Quiet on the Western Front" marked an important turning point in war literature and received wide recognition. The book was a huge hit and is considered a great literary work about war and its impact on people.

Literary critics have praised the book for its detailed depiction of realism and emotion. The novel has become a classic and is considered one of the best books about war.

In particular, the book has been adapted into a film by many directors. The first film version directed by Lewis Milestone was awarded two Oscars by the American Academy of Film Arts for two important categories: Best Director and Best Picture. For many years, film critics have always ranked the film among the best war-themed films.

In 2022, German director Edward Berger decided to bring the war from literature back to the big screen despite the giant shadow of Lewis Milestone. Once again, the film's content shocked the human conscience right from the first scenes.

In an interview with Le Firago , Edward Berger said that for him, when it comes to both world wars, as a German, there is nothing to be proud of in that part of history. All that remains is a sense of guilt, horror and a deep sense of responsibility of his people towards the past.

The film was a huge artistic success, receiving 14 nominations at the 76th BAFTA Awards, and 4 Oscars: Best Cinematography, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Production Design, Best Original Score.

For Vietnamese readers, the translation of Nothing Strange About the West was translated and introduced by Le Huy in 1962, introduced by the Culture Publishing House. Most recently, in 2017, Nothing Strange About the West reappeared with the translation of translator Vu Huong Giang, published by the Literature Publishing House and Dong A Culture Joint Stock Company.
