A “crazy idea” by Mark Zuckerberg was revealed in internal emails from 2022, presented during the US Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) antitrust trial against Meta.
Zuckerberg has floated the idea of “wiping the entire relationship graph,” or friend lists, so users can start over, perhaps every year. The Verge’s deputy editor Alex Heath, who watched the hearing, said Zuckerberg was concerned that “Facebook’s cultural influence is rapidly diminishing.” The Meta boss suggested testing it in a small country first, in case too many users left Facebook after the move.
“Even if Instagram and WhatsApp do well,” Zuckerberg said, “I don’t see a path for the company to succeed if Facebook goes down, so we have to do it right.”
Facebook head Tom Allison responded that he wasn't sure the idea was feasible, given his understanding of how important the friending feature was to Instagram, according to Business Insider. In his response, Zuckerberg also questioned how much effort it would take to switch from a friending model to a following model.
When an FTC attorney brought up the idea again during questioning on Monday, Business Insider reported Zuckerberg responded: “To my knowledge, we have never done that.”
Meta has recently taken a different approach to refreshing the Facebook experience, reintroducing a revamped Friends tab that doesn’t show content algorithmically. In January, Zuckerberg said the company’s big focus this year was “getting back to the original Facebook.”
