Samsung Note7 is back in the spotlight after the explosion incident that happened 9 years ago. A short video recently filmed by an American user has rekindled the phone's notoriety.
The video, posted at the end of June, shows a warning sign at an airport in the US, stating that “The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prohibits the carriage of Samsung Galaxy Note7 devices. Passengers are not allowed to carry this device in any form, including carry-on baggage, checked baggage, or use on board the aircraft. This regulation applies to all flights to, from, or within the US.”
The video has garnered over 2.5 million views in a short time. The Galaxy Note7 is a product that has been discontinued for a long time and is also the name that Samsung wants to avoid mentioning the most.
Samsung launched this phone model in August 2016, 9 years ago. However, shortly after its release, a series of phone battery explosion incidents occurred worldwide , causing injuries to users and property damage.

As of early September 2016, Samsung said it had recorded 35 cases of battery failure and explosions globally. The company then announced a large-scale recall of this phone model, with a quantity of about 2.5 million units.
The report said that as of July 2017, there were still about 120,000 Samsung Galaxy Note7s in circulation. This incident has had a profound impact on Samsung's later phone battery lines. Until now, the maximum charging capacity on Samsung phones is still limited to 45W.
Nearly nine years have passed, and airports in the US are still reminding passengers not to bring the Galaxy Note7. This phone model has also been put on the official no-fly list of the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
In addition, the Note7 series is also considered one of the direct causes of the brand's failure in the Chinese market. In 2013, the company's market share in China exceeded nearly 20%, making Samsung the largest phone brand in this country.
At the end of August 2016, Galaxy Note7 started to receive a series of reports of battery explosions in Europe. Therefore, countries in the continent also started to recall this phone model.

When the phone went on sale in China in September 2016, Samsung issued a statement confirming that the Note 7 used batteries from a different supplier than in other markets. Half a month later, the company announced the first recall of 1,858 Note 7s in China, but still stressed that this version did not pose a fire risk.
Despite being severely affected, Samsung was slow to reassure users and restore its brand image. It can be said that this was the “last straw” that caused Samsung to lose market share in China.
Since 2017, in order to regain the trust of users, Samsung has made efforts to promote its localization strategy, including prioritizing the introduction of advanced technologies as well as inviting Hua Chenyu and Chen Kun as brand ambassadors. However, sales and market share have shown no signs of improvement, leaving the company in a state of decline.
According to the latest data released by Canalys, in the second quarter of 2025, Samsung maintained its leading position in the global market, accounting for 19% of the market share. The company holds the number one position in developing markets, including Central America - Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
