Plane carrying Arsenal women's team suddenly... caught fire

According to the Daily Mail, the plane carrying the Arsenal women's team caught fire at Braunschweig Wolfsburg airport (Germany) after the team returned from a trip to the Wolfsburg women's team's stadium in the European women's football tournament.

The cause was a bird that flew into the engine just before the plane was about to take off. The accident created a loud bang.

Flames immediately erupted from the left engine of the Boeing 737. Staff quickly evacuated passengers, including the Arsenal women's team, to safety.

Arsenal FC announced on their website: "Our plane experienced a technical problem before take-off in Germany. The entire Arsenal Women's team had to stay in Wolfsburg overnight, before flying back to England on Monday afternoon. We would like to thank the staff on board and on the ground for their support."

Arsenal Women travelled to Germany on an Air Malta flight on Saturday and used the same airline to return to the UK on Sunday evening. Following the incident, the team will fly back to London on a different airline.

In fact, bird strikes in aircraft engines are not uncommon. However, experts estimate that there is only one fatality per billion hours of flight time due to this type of incident. Ninety percent of bird strikes occur during landing, takeoff, or low altitude.

Arsenal Women drew 2-2 with Wolfsburg in the first leg of the UEFA Women's Champions League semi-final. The return leg will be played on 2 May. In the other semi-final, Barcelona won 1-0 away to Chelsea.
