Leaked information from trademark registrations and statements from Japanese automaker executives suggest that the new 2026 Mazda CX-20 will likely be the successor.
At a recent Mazda event, the company shared the first sketches of the new generation of small crossover. The Mazda CX-20 will apparently adopt the latest Kodo design language, similar to what is currently present on large SUVs such as the CX-60 or CX-90.

Based on the shared images, it can be seen that the Mazda CX-20 has a compact body. The front of the car stands out with an extended grille, slim LED lights and vertical daytime running lights reminiscent of the design of the next generation CX-5. The overall shape of the car has a sporty style with a slightly sloping roofline in a coupe style, combined with a contrasting black roof and unique round taillights, promising to create a prominent appearance in the segment.
Although there are no official images of the cabin, many speculate that the Mazda CX-20 will have a more luxurious and modern interior than the CX-3. Mazda is famous for bringing a sense of luxury beyond its segment and the CX-20 is likely to be no exception. The materials will be more carefully crafted, the layout will be minimalist, sophisticated, and driver-oriented.

Compared to the CX-3, the new version is also expected to overcome the space drawback, which was a weakness of the previous model. The cramped rear seats and limited luggage space are complaints from users, and Mazda seems to be listening. In terms of technology, a digital dashboard and a new-generation entertainment system are likely to appear. The big question is whether the Japanese automaker will continue to retain the center console knob or switch to a full touch screen like some new models in the Chinese market.
A key element in the CX-20's development strategy is that Mazda has invested up to 150 million USD to upgrade its factory in Thailand - where it plans to produce a series of new SUVs, including the CX-20. This shows that the new crossover will use a platform developed for electrified powertrains, most likely a mild-hybrid system combined with a 1.5L or 2.0L I4 gasoline engine.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, with all-wheel drive (AWD) expected to be available on some trims. Mazda hasn’t confirmed whether there will be a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version, but that’s a possibility in the near future.
The small urban CUV segment is one of the fiercest "playgrounds" in the global market. Mazda CX-20 will have to face a series of strong competitors such as Hyundai Kona, Honda HR-V, Toyota Yaris Cross, Kia Stonic.

Although Mazda has not set a specific launch date for the CX-20, sources say the car will be introduced within the next 18 months, focusing initially on Asia- Pacific markets. The possibility of expanding to other regions, including Europe or North America, is still open.
