As a farmer with a lot of experience in growing plants, Mr. Phuc used to grow this melon in Ba Ria – Vung Tau. He cherished the dream of one day bringing the model of growing yellow melon to grow in his hometown of Vinh Bao – Hai Phong (where he was born and raised).

Thanks to the model new rural development program, each commune is encouraged to have a model. Mr. Phuc and his son took on the project to build on the commune's planned area to change the crop structure. In 2023, Mr. Phuoc started investing in the design of a greenhouse system, applying his many years of experience growing cantaloupes in Ba Ria.

Mr. Phuc renovated the ground, dividing the area into many different houses. Each greenhouse is about 1 hectare, with a fixed iron frame. Place coconut fiber substrate in each row to make it easier to move around and fertilize the plants. Mr. Phuc placed nylon tarps under the bags of substrate to isolate them from the ground to avoid pathogens.

In the prepared growing beds, Mr. Phuc installed a drip irrigation system using Israeli technology. With this system, water and fertilizer will be supplied to each plant, helping the melons grow and develop better, reducing labor costs and managing pesticide residues.

Mr. Phuc is determined to invest in growing melons using high technology in Tam Da commune, Vinh Bao district (Hai Phong city) as he is now because he has had a long time to do and experience this job. He clearly sees the value of proactive farming, he wants farmers in his hometown to also do farming in a modern environment, with new technology. Plants grow and develop as desired, avoiding all risks of weather and climate, creating quality products with high economic efficiency.

Before planting the melons, Mr. Phuc treated the greenhouse environment, sowed the seeds, and watered them. When the melons began to grow, they were hung on individual wires connected to the trellis system. The purpose was to save space, evenly distribute the melon leaves, and take advantage of optimal light for the plants.

The cantaloupes at Mr. Phuc’s farm are grown and cared for organically. The cantaloupes he is growing are called Hami and Thien Long. These two varieties have outstanding advantages in the growth and development process in his commune’s fields. However, they are not suitable for the cold winter weather. Therefore, in 1 year, Mr. Phuc only grows 3 crops of cantaloupes and melons, the remaining crop he grows cucumbers.

From planting to harvest, the yellow melon takes only about 80 - 85 days. Each Mr. Phuc melon tree only produces 1 fruit, concentrating 100% of the nutrients on the melon. When harvested, the melon will have an average weight of 2 - 2.5 kg/fruit.

Sharing with reporters about the farm's experience growing melons, Ms. Le Thi Nga, the farm's technical manager, said that melons are sun-loving plants and need a lot of nutrients for the fruit to reach the desired weight and sweetness.

During the process of caring for the melons, the farm workers must regularly prune and pinch the tops so that the plants can concentrate their nutrients on the fruit. During the flowering stage, bees are brought into the garden to pollinate the melons.

According to Ms. Nga, the bee breed used to pollinate the melons is a breed of bee from Italy. This breed of bee works very hard, the body of the Italian bee is bigger and stronger than ours. One working Italian bee is equivalent to 10 workers on the farm.

"Pollinating bees is much more effective than manual pollination. Due to the structure of the Italian bee's feet, which have fine hairs, when the bees move from one flower to another to collect nectar, the pollen will stick to their feet and stick evenly on the female flowers. Therefore, the melons pollinated by Italian bees will develop in a balanced, firm shape, not deformed like when pollinated by hand" - Ms. Nga said.

Also according to Ms. Nga's experience, cantaloupe grown on a vertical hanging trellis saves space and creates a clean, airy garden. Thanks to that, cantaloupe plants always grow and develop safely, limiting the disadvantages of weather, insects and external influences. Creating a melon product that is safe for consumers' health.

Currently, Mr. Phuc owns 3 greenhouses growing cantaloupes, each harvest harvests from 8 - 9 tons of cantaloupes/house, selling for 30 - 35 thousand/kg. Supplied at clean fruit stores, supermarkets, and traders. Providing jobs for over 20 local workers with stable income.
