Returning to the ATP top 10 after a period of decline, Daniil Medvedev received high expectations to go far at Wimbledon 2025, but the Russian tennis player unexpectedly collapsed in the first round against a lower-rated opponent, Benjamin Bonzi ( world rank 64) on the evening of June 30.
Bonzi entered the match with confidence, playing solidly and taking the first set into a tie-break, where he easily defeated Medvedev 7-2. In the second set, Medvedev fought back strongly to win 6-3, rekindling hopes of a comeback.
However, that scenario did not play out as Medvedev was inconsistent in the tie-break and lost 3-7. The last hope ended in the fourth set when the Russian player completely collapsed, losing 2-6.
The 1-3 defeat made Medvedev the first big seed to say goodbye to Wimbledon this year, opening a promising tournament full of surprises.
Bonzi said after creating the first surprise of the tournament: “Today is a special day for me. This is my first win against a top 10 player at a Grand Slam.
A tournament like this is always special because of the atmosphere, the green grass. I love this place. Daniil is a great player. He has been to the semi-finals here twice. I know it is a difficult match but sometimes it is better to play against players like this in the first round."
For the Russian player, this is the third disappointment at a Grand Slam tournament this year. At the Australian Open, he lost in the second round and left Roland Garros in the first round.
Besides, Stefanos Tsitsipas also withdrew in the first round of this tournament when he lost to Valentin Royer with a score of 6-3, 6-2 due to injury.
