"I really wanted to go back to Barca. It's always been the place I dreamed of returning to. But in the end, it didn't happen," Messi revealed, his voice choked with emotion.
After his contract with PSG expired in the summer of 2023, Messi and his father, Jorge Messi, actively negotiated a return to Camp Nou. However, the deal fell through, forcing him to seek a new path.
Messi continued: "The decision to play in America was a family one. After winning the World Cup, I felt I needed something different. I never thought about playing for any European team other than Barca. That thought never crossed my mind."
Messi has lived in Barcelona since he was 13 years old, rising through the ranks of the prestigious La Masia academy, and has dedicated nearly two decades to the Catalan club. But after leaving Barca in 2021 to join PSG, life in the City of Lights has not brought him the comfort he had hoped for.
"We went through two difficult years in Paris. The city is beautiful, my children adapted well, my wife was always supportive and adapted quickly. But I didn't. I didn't feel comfortable in my daily life or on the training pitch," Messi frankly shared.
For Messi, family happiness has always been the top priority. He believes that the MLS is developing, and that Inter Miami, though young, has great ambition. These factors, coupled with the unwavering support of his wife and children, led him to the United States.
"I came here for my family. I want to be happy, and I want my children to grow up in a positive, stable environment," Messi concluded.
Currently, Messi is reportedly very happy with his life in the US. It's even highly likely he will extend his contract with Inter Miami for another year.
Messi's two free kicks hit the crossbar. On the morning of April 14th, Lionel Messi was denied a brace of goals by the crossbar in Inter Miami's 0-0 draw against Chicago Fire in Round 8 of the 2025 MLS season.
