Messi became the first Inter Miami player to have a hand in 50 goals in a regular season in MLS.

With this brace, Leo has scored a total of 863 goals in 1,102 professional matches. In the 2025 season, Messi scored 13 goals in 19 matches in all competitions. He also reached the milestone of 50 goals in the regular season in MLS, including 29 goals and 21 assists in 37 appearances. This is an Inter Miami record.

In the 27th minute, Sergio Busquets successfully stole the ball in the middle of the field and passed it to Messi in front of the penalty area. The Argentine superstar gently used his left foot to curl the ball in from nearly 20 meters away, opening the score for Inter Miami. This was Messi's 98th goal from outside the penalty area in his career.

Montreal, bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference, could not trouble Messi. In the 68th minute, he passed the ball to Luis Suarez to make it 2-0. Messi deftly got past the Montreal defender before hanging the ball for Suarez to finish in an open position. Just 3 minutes later, Suarez doubled the gap with a close-range shot taking advantage of the opponent's center-back's mistake.

In the 87th minute, Suarez returned the favor with a sharp pass to help Messi face the goalkeeper and then gently chip the ball past him to complete his double.

However, Inter Miami's defense still allowed Montreal to score 2 goals in the second half thanks to Dante Sealy and Victor Loturi. Despite having 3 points, Inter Miami still ranked 6th in the MLS East, 7 points behind the leader Philadelphia Union.

Inter Miami will continue their MLS journey against Columbus on June 1, before entering the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
