Mexico arrests son of international drug cartel boss

Mexican authorities announced on May 9 that they had captured two sons of the leader of the Gulf Cartel, a powerful drug trafficking organization that kidnapped four American citizens in early March and later killed two of them.

According to the announcement of the Federal Prosecutor's Office specializing in Organized Crime (FEMDO), Axel Alfredo and Alan Alexis - two suspects accused of leading criminal groups operating under the Gulf Cartel gang were arrested by Mexican special police forces at two locations in Tamaulipas state.

Brothers Axel Alfredo and Alan Alexis are the sons of José Alfredo, the internationally known drug lord known as “The Accountant,” who once led the Gulf Cartel drug trafficking gang that operated along Mexico’s eastern coast and the Caribbean. However, José Alfredo was arrested by Mexican police in early 2022.

After the arrest, the authorities transferred the two suspects by air to Mexico City to assist in the investigation. The two will face charges of drug trafficking, murder, illegal possession of weapons and inciting violence.

Founded before the 1990s, the Gulf Cartel is considered one of the oldest mafia gangs in Mexico.

By the late 1990s, the group had added members who were former soldiers in the Mexican government and was a powerful arm of armed gangs in the Gulf of Mexico.
