Microsoft Defender gets poor performance rating

According to Neowin , AV-TEST analyzes the performance of major antivirus software in three categories: Protection, Performance, and Usability. Protection measures the ability to detect malicious samples, Performance measures system resource usage, and Usability detects false positives. Candidates are given a maximum score of 6 points in each category. Microsoft Defender did well in Protection and Usability, but was the worst of the bunch when it came to Performance. Microsoft's tool received 6 points in the first two categories, but only 5 points in Performance.

Microsoft Defender knocked out of AV-TEST's Top Antivirus Solutions

Explaining the performance evaluation process, AV-TEST said that through the tests, Windows Defender Antivirus for consumers has a significantly higher system load than the load of other products. Therefore, it only achieved a score of 5/6.

Also according to AV-TEST, among the products that require almost no system resources to operate are Avast, Avira, Bitdefender, G DATA, K7 Computing, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Protected.net, PC Matic and Trend Micro. All of these anti-malware solutions earned 6 points. In addition, products with a light system load and a score of 5.5/6 include AhnLab, AVG, ESET, F-Secure, McAfee, Microworld and Norton.

Despite its high rating in the Performance category, PC Matic is one of the worst-rated products in the Usability category, receiving only a score of 3/6. According to AV-TEST, PC Matic has more than 20 false positives and blocked applications.

With all that it does, Microsoft Defender failed to make it into the Top anti-malware solutions out of the 18 tools that AV-TEST evaluated.
