Pig price today October 11:

*Pig price in the North:

This morning, the live hog market in the North fell below the 68,000 VND/kg mark, with the highest purchase price reaching 67,000 VND/kg in most localities in the region.

Specifically, a decrease of 1,000 VND/kg was recorded in the provinces of Bac Giang , Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Thai Binh and Hanoi. Currently, the northern provinces and cities are trading in the range of 66,000 - 67,000 VND/kg.

*Pig price in the Central Highlands region

The Central Highlands region kept prices stable at around 64,000 - 66,000 VND/kg. Accordingly, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh are the provinces trading at 66,000 VND/kg, the highest in the region.

*Pig price in the Southern region

In the Southern region, only Bac Lieu province adjusted down 1,000 VND/kg, to 63,000 VND/kg, the same price as Ben Tre. This is also the lowest purchase price in the country.

Live pigs in the remaining provinces and cities in the region maintain a selling price of 64,000 - 65,000 VND/kg.

* Pork imports are 10 times higher than exports.

Despite being known as the world's fifth largest pig-raising country (in terms of number of pigs), Vietnam is still having to import meat. According to the Import-Export Department, in the first 8 months of 2024, the amount of pork imported was 10 times higher than the amount exported.

Although implemented, biosecurity in pig farms is still not guaranteed, leading to complicated epidemics, especially in small-scale farms and households. The proportion of small-scale farms and households is still high, with barns located in residential areas, close to houses. Therefore, dangerous infectious diseases in pigs still occur quite frequently and threaten the sustainability of the pig farming industry.

Besides the issue of disease safety, the cost of raising pigs in Vietnam is still high, mainly due to the cost of animal feed and breeding stock.

According to the Department of Animal Husbandry, Vietnam still depends heavily on imported inputs such as high-quality breeding animals and animal feed ingredients. Accordingly, there has not yet been a domestic animal feed ingredient production area to reduce costs. Annually, only 35% of raw materials (to produce about 20 million tons of industrial animal feed) are produced domestically, the remaining 65% must be imported.

Sharing with the press, Mr. Nguyen Van Trong, former Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry, said that the cost of domestic pigs is so high that the price of live pigs in many South American countries is even lower than that of pork (slaughtered pork) in Vietnam. The cost of feed ingredients is already high due to dependence on imports, and having to go through many agents and intermediaries, the price is even higher.

“If domestic production is not professional and systematic, there is even a risk of losing the domestic market, not to mention exporting. The Vietnamese livestock industry needs to solve two problems: disease safety and low cost to be able to export,” said Mr. Trong.
