VnExpressVnExpress26/01/2024

On January 27-28, the temperature in the North increased, ice at high points gradually melted, but was still within the freezing range, with an average daily temperature of 13 degrees Celsius or lower.

Entering the fifth day of the cold spell, today the temperature in the North has increased by 1-2 degrees compared to the coldest day, January 23. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting recorded that 11/25 provinces and cities are still cold below 10 degrees Celsius, concentrated in mountainous areas.

Ice remains only in Mau Son (Lang Son), Xin Cai (Ha Giang), but the area is narrowing due to temperatures above 0 degrees Celsius. Other high points such as Sa Pa (Lao Cai) are nearly 3 degrees Celsius; Dong Van (Ha Giang) is more than 3 degrees Celsius; Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc), Cho Ra ( Bac Kan ) are 5-6 degrees Celsius.

The meteorological agency explained that the temperature increase was due to the cold air mass being stable and showing signs of weakening. However, the weakening process was slower than previously predicted, so the North was still experiencing severe cold on January 27-28; January 29 was very cold, with an average daily temperature of 15 to 13 degrees Celsius. There was occasional light rain.

From January 30 to February 4 (December 23), the North will gradually warm up, favorable for shopping activities during the Giap Thin Tet holiday.

The US Accuweather website predicts that Hanoi will have a temperature of 10-14 degrees Celsius on January 27-28, and 14-15 degrees Celsius on January 29, then increase by 2-3 degrees Celsius each day. High points over 1,500 meters above sea level such as Sa Pa will remain cold until the end of January 29, with daytime temperatures gradually increasing to 8-15 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures of 6-9 degrees Celsius.

The cold weather in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An in the Central region will last until today, then the weather will warm up, only cold at night and in the morning.

The cold spell in the North began on January 23, with frost appearing on a series of mountain peaks over 1,000 m high, such as Mau Son (Lang Son), Thuong Phu, Xin Cai (Ha Giang), Cao Ly (Quang Ninh), and O Quy Ho (Lao Cai). In the center of Hanoi, the temperature at Ha Dong station dropped to 8.7 degrees Celsius on January 23.

The cold weather has forced hundreds of thousands of students in the North to stay home from school. Many elderly people and children have been hospitalized due to respiratory diseases, strokes, and heart attacks.
