Converting the structure of crops and livestock, specifically introducing new crops to the converted areas of Tan Hung district, is a suitable measure to improve land use efficiency and increase income for many households cultivating wet rice.

Previously, in 2024, Tan Hung district (Long An province) converted over 1,000 hectares from ineffective rice-growing land to growing short-term industrial crops and flowers.

Short-term vegetables and industrial crops are bringing high efficiency and profits to farmers in remote and border areas of Long An province.

Popular and "soil-tolerant" plant varieties are watermelon, cantaloupe, lotus, sesame, vegetables of all kinds... reaching over 124% of the set target, gardeners compare it as easier and more profitable than growing rice.

Farmers in this area in Long An province have also boldly converted to growing fruit trees on more than 250 hectares, mainly jackfruit, mango, coconut, durian, and grapefruit. Currently, more than 100 hectares have been harvested.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoai (42 years old, living in Hung Thanh commune, Tan Hung district, Long An province) said that for 2 consecutive years, converting rice fields to grow watermelons has helped him double his profits.

According to the People's Committee of Tan Hung district (Long An province), in 2025, the district strives to convert 1,545 hectares, of which 370 hectares are annual crops and 1,175 hectares are perennial crops, concentrated in places suitable for each crop variety.

"The district will reorganize agricultural production in some areas and regions to maximize the advantages of land and natural conditions of communes, creating favorable conditions for sustainable agricultural development.

From those models, specialized production areas with large product volumes are formed, creating commodity production areas, serving the restructuring of the agricultural sector," affirmed a representative of Tan Hung District People's Committee.
