In Phu Huu hamlet (Dinh My commune, Thoai Son district, An Giang province), farmer Tu Banh (born in 1954) created a unique gate (entrance gate) from 2 ancient yellow apricot trees. The gate to the house planted with these 2 rare yellow apricot trees is also a familiar "check-in" spot for many young people in the neighborhood every Tet holiday.
After more than 30 years of care, the two apricot trees have grown into a fence over 4m high, with wide foliage and bright yellow flowers every spring.
Mr. Tu Banh said it took him many years to create them. His yellow apricot gate is not only a part of the house, but also a unique work of art, with natural and delicate beauty.
The most special thing is probably that the two apricot trees are not grafted or bought from elsewhere, but are taken care of by him himself from the seeds of two ancient mother apricot trees, which have been growing right next to the house for a long time.
Mr. Bảnh said that since he was a child, he saw two mother apricot trees standing there, going through many rainy and sunny seasons, witnessing many changes in the village. Then, without knowing when, the seeds from the mother tree fell down and germinated into two baby apricot trees. Seeing that, he did not hesitate to cultivate and care for them.
And so they grew day by day under the diligent hands of the old farmer. Over time, they became healthy, tall, and had luxuriant branches and leaves, surpassing the mother tree.
“When I saw the two apricot trees growing over 2m tall, I started to shape them into the unique gate shape we have today.
This process requires patience, skill and a bit of art. I have to regularly prune, bend the branches and shape the two apricot trees to fit together in harmony, while still maintaining their natural beauty," said Mr. Tu Banh.
The gate (entrance gate to the house) is planted with 2 ancient yellow apricot trees that are green all year round of Mr. Tu Banh's family, a farmer in Phu Huu hamlet (Dinh My commune, Thoai Son district, An Giang province).
Every Tet holiday, when the cold winds of late winter have just ended, they bloom together, wearing a brilliant yellow coat.
With many years of experience growing apricot trees, around December 13, Mr. Tu Banh begins his familiar job - picking apricot leaves.
Usually, it takes him about a day to pick the leaves from each apricot tree.
He always does it himself, thereby recognizing abnormalities of the tree, promptly correcting "lost" apricot branches.
Tet is coming, a whole stretch of country road suddenly lights up, filled with spring colors.
Local people and even visitors cannot take their eyes off the splendid beauty of the yellow apricot gate when passing by. They stop their cars, stop to take pictures, and admire the talented hands of Mr. Tu Banh.
He was very happy when many people came to visit and take pictures of his yellow apricot gate. He considered it the joy of old age, a gift that he gave to life.
To him, the yellow apricot gate is not only a beautiful landscape, but also a close friend, a place to preserve memories of a bygone era. It is closely associated with the land and his family.
He did not use wire to bend the branches, but simply arranged the leaves and branches to intertwine in the most natural way. This work required skill and care, otherwise the branches would break.
In addition to watering and fertilizing the trees, he also regularly sprays pesticides to prevent diseases. Thanks to their strong roots in the soil, the two apricot trees always grow green all year round.
The gate made of two yellow apricot trees of Mr. Tu Banh is a symbol of the farmer’s love for nature and attachment to his homeland. It is also a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the old farmer “with muddy hands and feet”.
