According to information from the Department of Dermatology - Skin Aesthetics, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital , Ho Chi Minh City, Dr. Tran Ngoc Khanh Nam shared about the case of patient TTMT (43 years old, living in Can Tho), after using a quick skin whitening cream bought online for 5 days, itching and red rash appeared in the skin area where the medicine was applied. The seller explained that the skin would gradually get used to the medicine and it would go away. However, the symptoms got worse and worse after 7 days, the patient was so worried that he went to see a doctor.

When the patient came to see the doctor, he had many red papules - erythematous papules with blisters oozing yellow fluid, itching in many areas of the face and neck, and swelling in both eyes. The patient was diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis, was instructed to stop using all cosmetics and was treated with systemic and topical anti-inflammatory drugs, topical antibiotics and anti-allergy drugs.
After 10 days of treatment, the patient's symptoms were reduced by more than 90% and he was prescribed additional moisturizing and soothing creams to help restore the skin. However, according to Dr. Khanh Nam, at the Department of Dermatology - Dermatology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, doctors often encounter cases of complications from rapid skin lightening drugs.
Dr. Tran Ngoc Khanh Nam said that home-made skin whitening creams often do not have a clear origin. The ingredients of these creams often contain corticosteroids, hydroquinone, mercury, and may include some skin-peeling substances.

These are ingredients that are not only harmful to the skin when used incorrectly, such as corticosteroids that cause skin atrophy, stretch marks, contact dermatitis, acne, hydroquinone that causes blue-black hyperpigmentation, mercury that causes systemic poisoning symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite, swollen toes, ankles, edema around the eyes, kidney damage. Skin-peeling stimulants cause skin irritation, pain, burning, itching accompanied by redness, oozing, edema and hyperpigmentation.
Doctors say that skin lightening is a need of many women, however, using instant skin whitening drugs sold on the internet to peel is a harmful method and is not recommended by doctors. The use of skin lightening drugs must be prescribed by doctors and monitored throughout the use, and should not be arbitrarily purchased based on widespread advertisements on the internet. These drugs may contain skin lightening agents that are harmful to consumers' health.
