With the home crowd cheering them on, Man Utd started the game with great enthusiasm and needed only 10 minutes to break down Lyon's defence. After a pass from Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho pushed the ball past two defenders, before passing back for Manuel Ugarte to run up and finish from close range, opening the scoring.

The home team's opening goal pushed the pace of the match to its highest level. The ball was constantly circulated between the two ends of the field, accompanied by a series of tit-for-tat attacks. If MU had Bruno Fernandes, Lyon also had a dangerous "detonator" in Rayan Cherki. The young star born in 2003 sparked the visitors' two best chances in the 22nd and 32nd minutes. However, Andre Onana regained his form in time to save the home team.

Not long after, MU also responded with Bruno's shot hitting the crossbar, after a precise long pass from Diogo Dalot. Fans at Old Trafford did not have to regret for too long because in the 45+1 minute, MU doubled the gap. Dalot shone with a pressing situation, finishing diagonally, giving goalkeeper Lucas Perri no chance to block. The owner of the assist was Harry Maguire with his trademark cross-field pass.

In the second half, MU continued to play proactively and created a series of good opportunities. In front of the open goal, Garnacho and Dorgu could not take advantage, causing the home team to fall into adversity.

In the 71st minute, Lyon scored a goal after a close-range header from Lyon. The aggregate score after the two matches was now 3-4. Seven minutes later, Onana's net shook for the second time, after a close-range shot from Tagliafico.

After the home team lost their advantage, coach Amorim had to send Mason Mount onto the pitch. Immediately, the English midfielder and Yoro had a combination that caused Tolisso to receive a second yellow card, meaning Lyon would have to play with one less man in stoppage time and extra time.

MU had the advantage of one more player but played a deadlocked game. In the 105th minute, the nightmare happened when Cherki fired a powerful shot from the 16.5m line, defeating Onana and raising the score to 3-2 for Lyon.
