Alejandro Garnacho is one of Manchester United's brightest young talents in recent years. The 21-year-old Argentinian winger has high expectations at Old Trafford, but he was unexpectedly put on the transfer market by MU because he didn't fit into manager Ruben Amorim's tactics.
The relationship between the two sides broke down at the end of last season, after Garnacho was benched in the Europa League final against Tottenham. By the summer of 2025, MU had ruthlessly dropped Garnacho from the first team squad, excluded the striker from the summer tour, and banned him from training with the first team.
Over the past two months, Manchester United have been searching for a buyer for Garnacho, initially aiming for a price of £70 million. They subsequently lowered their demands to £60 million and then £50 million. They received several offers, but none materialized because Garnacho only wanted to move to Chelsea. Garnacho's representatives repeatedly informed the media about the striker's wishes. This is why the Blues were able to pressure Manchester United into accepting a higher price during negotiations.
Chelsea had been pursuing Garnacho since January 2025 but soon gave up because Manchester United demanded too high a price. This time, they only offered £25 million plus a player exchange, but United refused. The deal stalled for a while, and the two sides began more extensive discussions as the summer transfer window was about to close.
Ultimately, Manchester United had to concede defeat to Garnacho and Chelsea, accepting to sell the Argentine forward for a much lower price than expected. Reliable sources in England indicate that the two clubs have reached an agreement for Garnacho's transfer at £40 million. The young Argentine star will sign a seven-year contract with Chelsea.
MU managed to include a clause entitling them to 10% of the price difference if Chelsea sells Garnacho for a higher price in the future, but this is considered an insignificant amount. Furthermore, this clause would be invalidated if Garnacho fails to live up to expectations and Chelsea sells him for a lower price.
Garnacho joined United's academy from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He was promoted to the first team at the end of the 2021/22 season and made more appearances in subsequent years. In total, Garnacho has played 144 games for United, scoring 26 goals and helping the club win two trophies (Carabao Cup 2023 and FA Cup 2024).
