Alvaro Carreras helps MU make a profit. |
Manchester United are set to earn a total of £13.6m from two cleverly inserted sell-on clauses in the transfers of Alvaro Fernández Carreras and Anthony Elanga - a significant sum given the club's need to ensure compliance with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability (PSR) regulations.
Specifically, MU will receive 7.6 million pounds from the deal of Carreras moving from Benfica to Real Madrid with an estimated fee of 38 million pounds (equivalent to 50 million euros). The "Red Devils" enjoy 20% of the profit from this deal, thanks to the resale clause that was inserted in the contract when Carreras joined Benfica.
Carreras - the Spanish left-back - was not in coach Erik ten Hag's plans and was pushed to Benfica on loan in January 2024. After only a few months of impressive performance in Portugal, he was bought by Benfica for £5 million in the summer of 2024. Although MU had the right to buy this player for only £15 million, they decided not to activate the clause to respect Benfica, and now they are rewarded with financial profit.
Meanwhile, a further £8m will flow to Old Trafford from Anthony Elanga's move from Nottingham Forest to Newcastle United. United are entitled to 15% of the profits from the £50m resale fee Forest received - part of the deal when they bought Elanga from United earlier.
Earning more than £13m without directly selling players is seen as a smart financial move by the Old Trafford club. In an era where all spending is tightly controlled by PSR regulations, such “indirect income” can make a big difference, especially as United plan to rebuild their squad under new manager Ruben Amorim.
