Apple is planning to launch its own artificial intelligence search engine in 2026 to integrate with its Siri voice assistant, competing directly with OpenAI and Perplexity.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is testing a system internally called World Knowledge Answers — its artificial intelligence search engine that is expected to launch in 2026.

Insider sources revealed that Apple will add this technology to the Safari web browser and Spotlight, which is used for users to search queries from the iPhone's home screen.

In addition, Apple also aims to integrate World Knowledge Answers into its Siri voice assistant as an AI “answer engine,” a move that directly competes with OpenAI and Perplexity.

The idea behind the technology, according to the source, is to turn Siri and Apple's operating systems into a place where users can look up information from the internet in a similar way to ChatGPT, AI Overviews in Google Search, and a host of other AI search apps.

The underlying technology that powers this feature on the new Siri may come in part from Google, Apple's longtime search partner.

Gurman, citing an insider, said the two sides reached a formal agreement this week. Apple then evaluated and tested an AI model developed by Google to support the new version of Siri.

Apple had bet on a new Siri powered by Apple Intelligence, which was scheduled to launch in March, coinciding with the release of iOS 18.4. Due to quality concerns, the launch of the new Siri was pushed back to iOS 18.5 in May. However, just a few weeks later, Apple postponed the event again.

Gurman said the new Siri is expected to launch in the US in spring 2026. If so, it would likely be released as part of the iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4 updates, likely launching in March or April 2026.
