In recent years, in order to shift production to suit the climate and soil, in Lang Cheu commune, Bac Yen district, Dong rieng has been grown commercially to increase income. Currently, it is the Dong rieng harvest season for the people.
Dong rieng is a tuber plant, suitable for growing in cold climates and moist soil. It is an easy-to-grow, easy-to-care-for plant with a yield many times higher than that of other plants on a unit of upland area. In 2024, the commune will plant more than 60 hectares of Dong rieng; 1 hectare will harvest about 40 tons of tubers, with a selling price ranging from 2,800 - 3,000 VND/kg. At this time, coming to the highland commune of Lang Cheu, everywhere is bustling with the Dong rieng harvest, the roads are bustling with cars carrying Dong rieng to starch processing factories.
Mr. Hang A Tru, Party Cell Secretary, Head of Trang Dua Hang Village, Lang Cheu Commune, Bac Yen District, Son La : "For Trang Dua Hang Village, people have also switched from rice to growing Dong rieng. From Dong rieng, many households in the village have had a high income and people's lives have been stabilized."
Currently, Dong rieng has become a commodity in the highlands. Many households in Lang Cheu commune have converted their rice and corn cultivation land to Dong rieng, which gives high productivity. Mr. Hang A Denh's family in Trang Dua Hang village has utilized about 5,000m2 of their upland land to grow Dong rieng. This crop yielded 20 tons of tubers, sold at 3,000 VND/kg, and Mr. Denh's family earned 60 million VND.
Mr. Hang A Denh in Trang Dua Hang village, Lang Cheu commune, Bac Yen, Son La: "Upland rice is ineffective, my family has switched to growing Dong, this crop yielded about 20 tons of tubers, this year the price is also good, this year we have income for the family"
Currently, in the highland communes in general and Lang Cheu commune in particular, many cooperatives and households have invested hundreds of millions of VND to build Dong starch processing factories, reducing transportation costs to consumption places and avoiding traders forcing down prices. According to statistics, in Lang Cheu commune, there are currently 6 Dong starch processing factories.
Mr. Hang A Lang, Trang Dua Hang village, Lang Cheu commune, Bac Yen, Son La: "At this time, the factory has purchased more than 700 tons of Dong and has processed 53 tons of powder. Many people have brought Dong to the factory to buy."
At the Dong rieng workshop of Lang Cheu General Agricultural and Commercial Cooperative, the entire yard and warehouse are filled with Dong tubers, with 6-7 workers taking turns working day and night. From the Dong starch produced, the Cooperative also invested in equipment to process Dong vermicelli, creating jobs for many local workers.
Mr. Song A Mang, Head of Lang Cheu Agricultural and Commercial Services Cooperative: “We have purchased 1,000 tons of Dong tubers alone, and about 300 tons have not been brought back yet. This year, the expected tubers are 1,300 tons, and for vermicelli, we are expected to process 4-5 tons of dried noodles.”
With its potential strengths and suitable climate and soil, Dong rieng tubers bring high income, contributing to helping the people of Lang Cheu and the highland communes of Bac Yen stabilize and improve their lives./.
