Should you moisturize your skin in the summer?

VnExpressVnExpress03/08/2023

My skin tends to be very oily and shiny in the summer. Is this due to excess moisture and the fact that I don't need to moisturize every day? (Ngoc, 22 years old, Hanoi )

Reply:

Summer weather and sunlight cause the skin to sweat more and the sebaceous glands to become overactive, leading to acne or worsening existing acne. Sitting in air conditioning constantly also dries out the skin and accelerates aging due to dehydration. Therefore, whether you have oily, dry, or combination skin, you still need to use a moisturizer daily.

You should apply moisturizer twice a day, in the morning and evening. If you're worried about clogged pores or frequently wear a mask, you can apply moisturizer once in the evening before bed.

The ideal amount of moisturizer for summer is about two pea-sized drops (3-5 ml) for a small face and three pea-sized drops (5-7 ml) for a large or square face. Using too much or too little can negate or reduce the moisturizing effect.

In hot weather, avoid oil-based moisturizers. These can clog pores and allow bacteria to thrive.

For optimal skin care and protection, combine daily moisturizing and sun protection. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and cover up carefully before going outdoors.

The key to beautiful skin is healthy skin. Therefore, it's essential to moisturize your skin thoroughly, drink enough water to help your body eliminate toxins, get adequate rest, and avoid staying up late. Maintain a balanced diet. Supplement your body with vitamins, such as vitamins B and C from citrus fruits, peppers, and tomatoes. Vitamin E in soybeans, grains, and nuts enhances skin hydration, acts as an antioxidant, and reduces the formation of skin pigmentation.

If you experience more breakouts when using moisturizer in the summer, it could be because the product isn't suitable for your skin. You should use products containing hyaluronic acid and mineral water, which are very effective at hydrating and retaining moisture on the skin for many hours.
