2026 Tet movie season starts early

Although it is still more than half a year until the release date, in recent days, producers have continuously announced 2026 Tet film projects. With the early launch, Tet films are expected to be well prepared, creating a media advantage in reaching a diverse audience.

The earliest announcement was The Scent of Pho, which was introduced as having completed filming since early February 2025. Although the film, invested by Beta Group of businessman Bui Quang Minh (Minh Beta), has not revealed who will take on the role of director, it has attracted attention with the participation of "King of Northern Comedy" Xuan Hinh and actress Thu Trang. For Xuan Hinh, this is the first time the artist has appeared on the big screen, and in a Tet film project, so it has received a lot of attention.

With the name Pho Smell, the film immediately evokes the image of the iconic dish of Vietnamese cuisine. In the behind-the-scenes images revealed, the film crew went to Nam Dinh pho land to film. In addition, the scene of the characters happily wrapping banh chung and banh tet under peach branches also partly suggests to the audience about a family film, humorous, full of Tet atmosphere with close, authentic stories.

In August, two more Tet film projects were launched one after another. Tran Thanh continues to return to the Tet film race after receiving mixed reviews with The Four Guardians, released during the 2025 Tet season. This time, he will bring to the audience a film titled Tho oi!, in the psychological drama genre.

Sharing about the project for the Binh Ngo Tet season, Tran Thanh said: “I hope Tho oi! will be a youthful, dynamic movie with a young, new, enthusiastic cast with a trendy lifestyle. We will welcome a Tet season with many emotions through a familiar but equally interesting story”. Up to now, Tran Thanh has kept the identity of the cast of Tho oi! a secret. However, at the launch of Van Mai Huong's new MV at the end of July, he said he had invited the female singer to participate in his Tet movie.

Although he is already familiar to the audience, for director Le Thanh Son, this is the first time he has participated in the Tet film market with the project Treasure of Heaven. Right at the opening ceremony of the project, the film attracted attention with the appearance of the full cast. In addition to the reunion of the couple Tuan Tran - Phuong Anh Dao after the work Mai, the film also has the participation of Quach Ngoc Ngoan, Ma Ran Do, Vo Tan Phat, La Thanh, Khuong Le, Ta Lam... and veteran artists such as: People's Artist Kim Xuan, Trung Dan.

According to the crew's initial revelation, the film will not only be a rich spiritual dish in the first days of spring, but also an emotional journey - where conflicts, love, aspirations and beliefs are expressed through a lens that is both humorous and humane.

Director Le Thanh Son shared: “This is the film I always want to send to the audience during the Tet holiday, the season of family love, tolerance, and reunion. Therefore, the content of the film focuses on tolerance and empathy between people through the image of the main character, a person with a pure and innocent heart in the midst of a vibrant and complicated life.”

Waiting for breakthrough works

As usual, the Tet movie season is always the most exciting time of the year for the Vietnamese film market. Before Tho oi!, Tran Thanh was the holder of a series of records in terms of revenue. Mrs. Nu's House, released on Tet 2023, earned 475 billion VND before being dethroned by Mai a year later with a revenue of more than 550 billion VND, becoming the highest-grossing Vietnamese film in the history of Vietnamese cinema. The Four Guardians, despite receiving mixed reviews when released on Tet 2025, also earned more than 330 billion VND.

The 2025 Tet film season also witnessed a spectacular comeback when Nu hon bac bien directed by Thu Trang for the first time, although it was somewhat underdog in the first days of its release, it later rose and closed with a revenue of more than 210 billion VND. Den am hon, released on the 10th day of Tet, also surpassed the 100 billion VND revenue mark. In addition, another work released on the occasion of Tet 2025, Yeu ma ban than co, also had a revenue of more than 20 billion VND.

Although the Tet movie season is always the "golden land" of Vietnamese cinema, with box office appeal and special attention from the audience, the market is still waiting for truly breakthrough works.

Not only stopping at entertainment or star guarantee, audiences increasingly want Tet movies with new stories, rich in emotions, imbued with cultural identity but still keeping up with modern trends. It is these efforts to find differences that will determine the face of Tet movie season in the coming years.
