Water level of hydroelectric reservoir increased by 3-10 m

VnExpressVnExpress15/06/2023

Water levels in Lai Chau , Son La, Tuyen Quang, and Ban Chat hydroelectric reservoirs have risen 3-10 meters compared to a week ago, but are still around the dead water level.

On the afternoon of June 15, Vietnam Electricity Group said that at 6 p.m., the water level of Lai Chau hydroelectric reservoir was 275.6 m, about 10 m higher than on June 8; Son La lake was 177.5 m, 2 m higher; Tuyen Quang lake was 94 m, 3 m higher; Ban Chat lake was 435.2 m, nearly 4 m higher.

Representatives of the management units of the two hydropower plants Lai Chau and Son La said that the current water level is enough to generate electricity again. However, the two reservoirs will continue to store water to operate during the upcoming peak hot days. With the 1,200 MW Lai Chau hydropower plant, if all three generators operate, it will last 47 hours before reaching the dead water level; the 2,400 MW Son La hydropower plant can operate for 24 hours.

The water level of hydroelectric reservoirs increased because the generators stopped or reduced their operating capacity to store water, and especially in the past week there was rain in the North. According to the meteorological agency, the rain in the Northwest was 70-170 mm, some places over 200 mm, such as: Pha Din ( Dien Bien ) nearly 205 mm, Phieng Lanh (Son La) over 230 mm.

Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecasting Department (National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting), said that next week the North will continue to have rain at night, with only 20-40 mm of rainfall, and the weather will be hot and sunny. The total flow on the Da River to Hoa Binh Lake is 90% lower than the average of the same period in many years; on the Thao River in Yen Bai is 51% lower than the same period; and on the Lo River in Tuyen Quang is 79% lower.

It is forecasted that in the next two months, due to the impact of El Nino, the average temperature across the country will generally be 0.5-1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years. Heat waves will appear more frequently in the North and Central regions. Rainfall in the North will still tend to be 5-20% lower than the average of many years.

Previously, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said there were two factors causing water shortages in hydroelectric reservoirs, leading to power shortages. Firstly, since April, rainfall in the North has been about 30-70% lower than the average of many years.

Second, this year the heat wave in the North appeared early in April with many temperature records. In Kim Boi, Hoa Binh province, the temperature reached 41.4 degrees Celsius on March 22, 3.3 degrees higher than the old record in 1996. Tuong Duong (Nghe An) recorded the highest temperature in the history of measurement in Vietnam at 44.2 degrees Celsius.
