US proposes UN resolution on conflict in Ukraine, "ignoring" Russian-occupied territory

On February 21, diplomatic sources said that the US proposed a United Nations (UN) resolution on the conflict in Ukraine, which omitted any mention of the Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia in a special military operation.

Washington's proposal comes amid an increasingly tense standoff between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, after Trump said Zelensky's participation in peace talks was "not important".

The proposal appears to run counter to another draft resolution drafted by Kiev and its European allies - countries that Mr Trump also sought to exclude from talks on the future of the three-year-old conflict.

The Ukraine-Europe text stressed the need to intensify diplomatic efforts to end the conflict this year, while condemning Russia's aggression and pledging to protect Kiev's "territorial integrity." It also reiterated the UN General Assembly's previous demand for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine immediately and unconditionally.

Meanwhile, Washington's text only calls for a "quick end to the conflict" without mentioning Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia welcomed the move as "a good step", but stressed that the document did not address the "roots" of the conflict.

Last week, although Russia and the United States held their first high-level talks aimed at restoring relations and preparing the ground for ending the conflict in Ukraine, the situation on the front lines has not calmed down.

In the Kursk region, the fighting became more intense with the Ukrainian Army's offensive efforts. On February 20, Ukraine launched four strong counterattacks in the Kursk region, but all were stopped. Notably, on February 19, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Russian Army had crossed the border of Kursk province into Ukrainian territory.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry also announced that the Russian armed forces had launched attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, military airports and energy targets to support this military operation. In addition, the Tula paratroopers were also said to have taken control of the Sudzha-Rylsk road during the "liberation" of the village of Sverdlikovo in the Sudzhansky district of Kursk province.

Meanwhile, in other directions of the front, the Russian Army continued to gain the initiative and advance to more favorable tactical positions.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported combined strikes with high-precision long-range air, sea and ground weapons on gas and energy facilities in Ukraine, which allegedly facilitated the activities of the "enemy" arms industry. All intended targets were hit.

In addition, Russia also carried out successful air, drone, missile and artillery attacks on military airports, ammunition depots, drone bases and 163 locations with personnel and equipment of the Ukrainian armed forces.
