The US cannot contain China in the same way as the Cold War

US experts say Washington's efforts to contain China through the old Cold War-style approach will fail.

Daniel Wagner, CEO of cross-border risk consultancy Country Risk Solutions, said that US efforts to contain China through a Cold War-style approach - which has received support from some prominent figures in Washington - will be a "huge" failure.

“Some politicians in Washington believe that the Biden administration’s policy of trying to find a middle ground through détente is naive and that only a hard-line approach, similar to former US President Ronald Reagan’s approach to the Soviet Union, can effectively contain Beijing,” Wagner wrote.

This assumption is based on a false premise, according to the CEO and founder of Country Risk Solutions, who argues that China today is very different from the Soviet Union in the 1980s.

According to expert Wagner, China now has a huge and extremely diverse economic power with a combination of public and private sectors.

Despite current economic and financial challenges, China remains the global manufacturing hub, accounting for 14% of global trade and the largest trading partner for more than 120 countries.
