White House national economic adviser Kevin Hassett said the Trump administration has agreed to allow exports of Nvidia's H20 AI chip to China.
Speaking on Fox News on July 29, Mr. Hassett said President Trump considered and decided to allow the export of Nvidia H20 chips to China as part of a strategy to maintain America's technological advantage.
Restricting access could spur China to develop its own technology and advance in the field of AI chips, he said.
Two weeks ago, Nvidia announced that it had applied for a license with the US government to continue selling its H20 series of chips to the Chinese market, and was assured by Washington that the license would be granted soon.
The H20 is the most powerful chip that Nvidia can currently legally supply to China, although it is limited in processing power compared to versions exported to other markets due to export controls imposed during Trump's first term and continued under former US President Joe Biden.
This decision to relax shows a strategic adjustment in US technology policy towards China./.
