Swiss authorities predict that around 30,000 asylum seekers will enter the country in 2024.
The number of asylum applications increased again last year, according to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). Although there are no official statistics yet, it is estimated that Switzerland received around 30,000 asylum applications in 2023. The government is currently working with regional authorities to organize more accommodation for refugees.
The SEM said that the number of asylum applications usually decreases in the winter months, then increases again from April - when the weather is favorable in the Mediterranean. Therefore, the SEM is still preparing scenarios to handle the case of a sharp increase in the number of asylum seekers applying to Switzerland this year.
