It is rare to find a collective economic unit with a long history and glorious achievements like Rach Gam, which was awarded the noble title of Labor Hero in the renovation period. Recalling the past, Mr. Tran Do Liem, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Rach Gam Cooperative, concluded that Rach Gam went through 3 periods of formation and development. That was the operational period during the subsidized economic period, with a very important role, being the main responsibility for river transport.
The highlight is that right from the first days of establishment after the complete liberation of the South and the unification of the country, the cooperative model was immediately established and developed strongly. Following the subsidy period, the cooperative fulfilled its role of transporting key goods, contributing to promoting production, business, and supporting the economy to the Central.
Established in 1979, Rach Gam Cooperative has gone through many ups and downs. When it was established, Rach Gam had only 70 wooden passenger boats, more than 100 members and workers, and one mid-level official. Nearly half a century has passed, Rach Gam has now become the leading comprehensive inland waterway transport unit in the Inland Waterway Transport industry nationwide, with total fixed assets of about 500 billion VND, registered capital of about 450 billion VND, average annual transport output of nearly 3,000,000 tons, output of 430 million tons/km, newly built 5 - 7 barges from 1,300 - 2,500 tons... Total revenue in the last 5 years has reached around 90 - 190 billion VND/year depending on the period. With its achievements, Rach Gam has been awarded the title of Hero of Labor, Third Class Independence Medal, Labor Medal (First, Second, Third), and twice received a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister ... |
Not to mention, Rach Gam also participated in border protection. Because after the day the South was completely liberated and the country was unified, the whole country focused on overcoming the consequences of war, the cooperative also participated in transporting materials for reconstruction projects, participating in transporting weapons, military uniforms, and military equipment to support the southwestern border.
When the country entered the phase of gradually eliminating subsidies and transforming the economic model, with the spirit of learning while working, Rach Gam still stood firm and continued to develop in the market economy period thanks to timely grasping new policies, with a dynamic mindset, adapting to innovation. However, the question being asked is in the current phase of national innovation and increasingly deep international integration, which path will Rach Gam choose?
When discussing this issue, Mr. Tran Do Liem said that innovation is always like that, there are people going to the big sea but there are also people from outside. Rach Gam does not go to the big sea but can also welcome "new friends" from other countries.
Because when there are many foreign investors, the demand for transporting goods will of course change. The core factor is what factors the cooperative must prepare to welcome new opportunities, first of all, ensuring the quantity and quality of goods during transport.
Certainly, the immediate thing to do is that Rach Gam must prepare qualified means of transport, from wooden hulls to iron hulls or gradually increasing the ship's tonnage, for example, building a brand and management process in the cooperative's own way.
Mr. Tran Do Liem also emphasized that high-quality human resources are always considered the core factor of cooperatives. Integration is very close, with a profound impact on many fields. If we just sit at home and wait like before, it will be difficult. First of all, business people need to think, be proactive in innovation, and have a plan to adapt to each specific stage, and proactively use human resources to meet practical requirements.
In general, in the new journey, Rach Gam must think ahead, act ahead and arrive first. To do this, it is necessary to regularly update policies and even anticipate factors that may occur.
After nearly half a century, Rach Gam ships have been moving forward. From a small fleet of wooden-hulled ships to large-capacity iron-hulled ships, with a huge amount of cargo transported annually, along with the expansion of business lines, the focus of which is the successful construction of 100-ton ferries, Rach Gam has always been considered one of the collective economic units of national stature.
However, according to Mr. Tran Do Liem, Rach Gam currently has difficulties and needs leaders to firmly grasp the helm. “In any era, the difference lies in the person who leads the organization and manages the activities. Because business always faces difficulties, only with great virtue can one employ people, and with a bright mind can one see far, not to mention great talent and strong will…”- Mr. Tran Do Liem said.
