That was the call of United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his New Year's message, released on December 30.

In his message, Secretary-General Guterres said that 2024 is a year in which it is difficult to find hope. War causes great pain and loss, while inequality and division cause tension and suspicion. The Earth has just experienced the hottest decade in history and 2024 will be the hottest year ever.
“We must get off this path of destruction and we have no time to waste,” he stressed.
According to him, even in the darkest moments of 2024, there is still hope for positive change.
“ I see hope in activists – young and old – speaking out for progress, in heroes overcoming enormous obstacles to deliver humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable, in developing countries fighting for fair finance and climate, in scientists and innovators breaking new ground for humanity,” he said.
Notable among them is the Future Compact, adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2024. The agreement provides new impetus to build peace through disarmament and conflict prevention, reform the global financial system, promote more opportunities for women and young people, and build safeguards for technology that puts people at the center.
Looking ahead to the New Year, Secretary-General Guterres said countries must work together to put the world on a safer path, through drastic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and a transition to a renewable future – a necessary and feasible process.
He also stressed the need to adhere to values and principles based on human rights, international law and the UN Charter.
In the final part of his New Year's message, although recognizing that there are no certainties about 2025, the UN Secretary-General pledged to stand side by side with all efforts towards establishing a peaceful, equitable, stable and healthy future for all.
“Together, we can make 2025 a new beginning. Not a divided world, but a united world,” he stressed.
