Beef cattle farming in the province has recently been maintained stably with a total herd of over 28,000 heads. This direction helps beef cattle gradually replace a part of the pig herd which is decreasing due to the impact of complicated disease developments and unstable prices.
In Vu Ban commune (Binh Luc) - a leading locality in developing beef cattle farming, there is currently a total herd of more than 700 cows. Most households in the commune have a herd size of 10 cows or more, some households raise more than 30 cows. To develop sustainable livestock farming, the commune has built a concentrated beef cattle breeding area of nearly 10 hectares, meeting the scale of raising 200 beef cattle/batch. The renovation and improvement of the quality of the local beef cattle herd is thoroughly implemented. Currently, all of the nearly 200 sows in the area are bio-engineered to ensure insemination with foreign cows. Therefore, 100% of beef cattle are 3B (BBB) breed with large body size, high meat ratio and quality.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Tung, Vice Chairman of Vu Ban Commune People's Committee, said: Beef cattle farming has developed strongly in the commune in the past 5 years, replacing pigs. Currently, the production value of beef cattle accounts for about 40% of the total livestock production of the locality. This is a type of livestock that the commune continues to encourage and create conditions for people to develop further.
At Mr. Nguyen Van Quyet's farm, the concentrated beef cattle breeding area of Vu Ban commune currently has 40 beef cattle. The beef cattle breed he chose to buy from the people all meet the 3B standard. Therefore, after 2 years of raising, the weight when sold reached about 600 kg/head, nearly 2 times higher than the previous native yellow cattle breed (de cattle). The profit from beef cattle increased to the equivalent of 2 times the old breed. In 2024, Mr. Quyet participated in the project "Building a model for fattening beef cattle on biological bedding to reduce environmental pollution and increase efficiency in raising" for 10 beef cattle under the program implemented by the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center.
According to Mr. Quyet: Applying new farming methods, beef cattle have less diseases and efficiency is increased. With the results, I am planning to continue expanding the scale of beef cattle farming and applying biological bedding methods to the entire barn to increase family income.
Currently, the whole province has built 5 concentrated beef cattle breeding areas. In Ly Nhan district, there is a total herd of nearly 6,000 beef cattle, concentrated in localities with advantages in land and people's experience in raising cattle, such as the communes: Chan Ly with more than 850 cattle, Chinh Ly with nearly 630 cattle, Phu Phuc with 585 cattle, Nhan Thinh with 572 cattle, Nguyen Ly with nearly 500 cattle... The cattle herd has been improved, gradually removing the breed of cattle with low body condition and weight, replacing it with new breeds of high-quality beef cattle, mainly the 3B breed. The breeding method has also changed significantly through people's interest in investing, applying care techniques and ensuring nutrition for beef cattle...
Through research, it is known that the province's yellow cattle herd currently has a sindization rate of over 90% of the total herd; the number of female cows qualified for breeding high-quality beef cattle is over 35% of the total herd. The whole province currently has a high-quality beef cattle herd of over 12,000, crossbred from BBB, Brahman, Droughtmaster, Angus breeds... At the same time, from the models of the project "Building a model for fattening beef cattle on biological bedding to reduce environmental pollution and increase efficiency in livestock farming" helps promote the efficiency of beef cattle farming.
Along with the increase in economic value, the process of using microbial products helps the bedding for beef cattle to always be dry, without the characteristic odor of cow manure and urine. Thanks to that, the cows are healthy, reducing diseases, especially respiratory diseases and hoof diseases; the cows increase their digestive ability; limit the use of antibiotics, no antibiotic residues help prevent and limit the risks of contamination affecting food safety, helping to produce high quality beef products...
In particular, through the production process, beef cattle farming has many advantages and benefits. It is notable that the product price is quite stable, and farmers rarely suffer losses. Currently, the price of live cattle for sale is over 70 thousand VND/kg, the lowest in the past 5 years, but after deducting costs, people still have a job because they can take advantage of natural green food sources (grass, dry straw, banana trees, etc.). Normally, the price of live cattle for sale at over 80 thousand VND/kg will bring a profit of about 5 million VND/head. In addition, beef cattle are less susceptible to diseases if fully vaccinated, such as: Foot and mouth disease, anthrax, lumpy skin disease, etc.
Beef cattle farming is still identified as a strength of many localities in the province. Therefore, localities have been paying special attention to improving the quality of breeding herds and applying techniques in caring for and raising cattle to help increase the value of livestock farming. Mr. Nguyen Van Thong, Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, assessed: Beef cattle farming in the province is being paid attention to improving quality. People are changing their methods towards concentrated farming, creating quality products to meet market demand. To contribute to further improving the quality of beef cattle, the center is actively transferring scientific and technical advances in care and raising, helping people to further improve the efficiency of beef cattle farming.
