Recently, doctors at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital made their mark when they received and successfully treated a 16-year-old French tourist who suffered a serious spinal injury due to an accident while participating in an adventure game at sea. The victim was brought to the hospital with severe back pain and limited spinal mobility. According to the diagnosis, the victim suffered a lumbar vertebra fracture and needed urgent surgical intervention to avoid the risk of long-term damage to the spinal cord and motor function.

Receiving the victim, Dr. Dang Viet Son, Head of the Department of Cranio-Spinal Surgery (Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital) and his colleagues organized the surgery, using the modern pedicle screw technique, allowing the fixation of broken vertebrae by implanting screws and specialized metal rods into the bone, helping to stabilize the spinal structure and minimize the risk of spinal cord damage. After the surgery, the victim's condition improved positively, with a significant reduction in pain and the ability to move the spine again. "The victim is very young and suffered a serious injury while traveling, so the family is extremely worried. What we put first is to intervene quickly, both to ensure saving the life and to maintain the child's ability to move later. The pedicle screw technique helps to firmly fix the spine, minimizing the risk of spinal cord compression. After treatment at the department, the patient was discharged from the hospital and returned home in a stable health condition," said Dr. Dang Viet Son.

These hospitals are proficient in performing open heart surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery, aortic surgery, and research and treatment of genetic diseases, genetic medicine, stem cells and organ transplantation, on par with major hospitals and medical centers across the country.

Continuous training and early appropriate remuneration policy

Inheriting and promoting the achievements of the national health sector over the past 80 years, the city's health sector has determined that medical human resources are the key factor determining the effectiveness of the health system and the quality of health care services for the people. Director of the Department of Health Le Minh Quang said that in the context of changing disease patterns, aging population, increasing demand for medical examination and treatment, along with the process of industrialization, urbanization and international integration, the development of medical human resources is becoming a big challenge for localities, especially large cities like Hai Phong. That requires the city's health sector to have synchronous solutions to improve the quality of human resources.

To improve the quality of human resources in the city's health sector, ensuring "solid expertise and good medical ethics", the Department of Health directs its affiliated medical facilities to promote continuous training and professional development for medical staff. In particular, the effective implementation of Resolution 10/2023 of the City People's Council on specific policies to support training and remuneration for human resources in the health sector in the period 2024-2030 helps the sector organize specialized training courses, modern technical training and update medical examination and treatment procedures according to the classification, improving the quality of medical services.

The health sector also develops diverse training forms such as online training, on-site training, prioritizing health workers at the commune level and in disadvantaged areas. Cooperate with leading universities and hospitals at home and abroad to send doctors and technicians to study and improve their professional qualifications. Continue to advise the city to issue new policies to improve the treatment and income of health workers.

In addition, human resource planning based on analysis of actual needs at different levels and regions helps to allocate resources reasonably; build a professional and modern working environment; and at the same time focus on and encourage scientific research and innovation among the medical workforce.

After the merger, the Hai Phong Department of Health has 6 specialized departments, 2 branches and 63 public service units. The total number of human resources in the city's health sector is 17,940 people, including 3,906 doctors (including 1,765 postgraduate doctors, accounting for nearly 45% of the total number of doctors), 397 pharmacists with university and postgraduate degrees, and 9,129 nurses, midwives and technicians.
